disc brakes questions.
Has anyone bought drop spindles and then bought calipers, rotors, pads, etc.. from their local parts store?
I was ready to buy the disc brake conversion kit, but am having second thoughts. I just got a price for a 73 C10 6 lug rotor, it was $30.00. The kits charge $180.00 extra for 6 lug rotors, that's a savings of 120.00 plus shipping! I am thinking of buy just the drop spindle and buying the rest of the system locally. I proabaly should add, I am thinking of buying the oem drop spindles, so I can use the stock suspension parts. Has anyone done this? I am missing something here? This seems to make sense to me. Thank you. |

I dont know of any 6lug rotors to fit 71 up,except aftermarket. the 4x4s will be 6 lug,but are a different rotor than the 2 wds.I think GMC Paul has the 2 wd 6 lug rotors...

THOSE KITS ARE GREAT FOR DOING ALL THE LEG WORK FOR YA' BUT I DON'T KNOW IF THEIR WORTH THE PRICE. I WENT W/DROP SPINDLES & JUST BOUGHT THE REST OF THE PARTS NEEDED LOCALLY BECAUSE IT WOULD BE EASIER FOR WARRANTY PURPOSES IF THE NEED ARISES.

Thanks for the info guys.
So, I can buy just the drop spindles and buy the parts locally? I was hoping to hear that. The kit I am looking at is $899.99 plus. That's without a booster. SCOTI, what kind of spindles did you buy, do you remember? Seems most dealers sell Western. I think finding the correct 6 lug rotor will be my biggest problem. Thank you so much for the info! ------------------ |

Johny, why do you want a 6 lug rotor? What year is your truck? 4x4? I'm assuming that you have a 2wd '70 or older that you want to swap for disc brakes. If thats the case, then you can't get OEM 6 lug rotors for it. Only 5 lug. If you want to stick with 6 lug, then you'll have to buy the specialty rotors from a vendor such as GMC Paul etc.
I just did this swap (used regular spindles though) on my '68 and found it cheaper to swap the rear end to a 5 lug to match the new 5lug rotors. Hope this helps. Guess I should of had this in my question.
I have a 67 C10 2 wheel drive small block. I like to use 6 lug rotors cause I have 6 lug ralley wheels. I bought and painted, cleared last summer, they came out real nice and I hate to go through that again. Trying to avaiod "Buying the kit" Maybe I have to? ------------------ |

If you want to use 6 lug rotors, here's what I did for my 70 c/10.
Contact Mike McGaughy's Classic Chevy. They're located in Fresno,Ca. They have a six lug rotor kit for $219.00 The kit includes the two 6 lug (12 inch) rotors, fully loaded calipers, bearings, seals, brake hoses.Even the spindle nut and dust caps. The rotors are made to fit 71,72 spindles, possibly even up to 87. I know they fit 71,72 because I used 71 spindles. I'm in the process of doing a full frame off on my 70 truck, so I can't say how rotors function. But the quality of the kit was great.Everything installed with no problems, looks factory. The price for mine including shipping to Dallas was 249.00, and thats still cheaper than trying to piece together parts from the local auto parts stores. They also have 2.5" drop spindles for $229.00 that carry a lifetime warranty. If you want more information you can reach them at 559-226-8196 Here's their website: www.mcgaughysclassic.com

Early Classic has the spindles, or parts, or kits, depending on which way you decide to go. They set-up and made the original 71-72 OEM style but with the 2.5" drop. They can give you more information if you need or decide you want there thoughts.
