Sm465 oil?

Didn't want to start another sm465 oil thread but after searching around I know what type of oil to use but don't know where to get this type of oil. all these places that have oil have the gl5 oils and I don't know if I should use that type of oil. I cannot seem to find regular 80w or 90w oil without gl5. Anyone have an idea where to get it?

Re: Sm465 oil?

I don't think it matters if the oil for the SM465 has GL5 rating or not. The tranny doesn't have any clutches, like a posi rear end, that needs it. But I don't think it will hurt anything if its in there.

Re: Sm465 oil?

You want to use a gl4 80w-90 gear oil look on ebay just got some for borg warner st10 trans for my car. The gl5 has sulfur in it which attacks the yellow metals ( aka sychronizer rings ) and wears them out faster. I have used gl5 in the past as a top off never had any problems. Brad Penn 80w-90 on ebay was about 9.00 a quart also summit keeps it.

Re: Sm465 oil?

Napa sells Sta Lube in GL4. I use it in my 69 Z/28 without issues.

Re: Sm465 oil?

SL24229 for the quart and SL24239 for the gallon. Found the numbers in some of my paperwork. This is Sta Lube 85W90 with GL4

Re: Sm465 oil?

Believe it or not, you can actually run a heavy motor oil in a 465 if you had to. As long as it is relatively thick and slippery. But yeah, any gear oil will suffice with that beast. Synthetics however will seep

Re: Sm465 oil?

Just found this. It's Valvoline's recommendation for transmission oil/fluids.

Page 6 for GM 4 speeds. Iron case transmission=Synchromesh.

Aluminum case 4 speed= Synchromesh or motor oil.

Penzoil is pretty much the same, their equivillent is Synchromax.

BTW Synchromesh and Synchromax are 75/90 GL-3 gear oils.
