4l60 tranny hard shifting sometimes

Does the speedometer is needit for shifting for tranny to work right? I have 4l60 that works good most of the time but at times it feels like ut takes to long to shift, from 2nd to 3rd kind a like slips. The tranny was rebuild and the shop who rebuild it told me that it needs a signal from the speedometer

Camaney; your wording is a little hard to understand, but what I think your actually asking about is the VSS. The VSS is the Vehicle Speed Sensor, which is located on the side of the transmission, and provides a pulse signal to the ECM. This is how the computer has an accurate idea of how fast you are going, and it uses this to help control the 4l60e.

You need to make sure you have the VSS hooked up properly, and that its working. It should help iron out the shifting problems, unless there is an additional problem.

A 4L60e requires a vehicle speed signal to shift. A 4L60 does not. Do you know which trans you are using?

well i was out of it last night after work baslicy no you dont need a signal from the speedometer but you do have to have working vss for the computer to tell the trans how to shift

More than likely a 4l60e. Can you snap a pick of the trans for us to confirm? If it is a 4l60e the vehicle speed sensor will be on the passenger side tailhousing at the rear of the trans.

Re: 4l60 tranny hard shifting sometimes

the 4l60e uses a 40 tooth reluctor wheel to read the pulse signal. if you have this in a non original 4l60e vehicle then you will need to retrofit one into it. happy motoring

If you are putting a 4l60e into a vehicle that would not normally have one (which is every swap on this forum basically), there is no reason to swap the reluctor. The year, vehicle, or what it came with originally is moot.

If you wanted to put a 4l60e behind an LS motor that didn't have one, there is still no need to mess with the reluctor. The only thing needed is to modify the ECM to run on the 4l60e settings, and to make any changes to the harness that you need (deleting the ISS if it was an 80e, or segment swapping for the manual).

While 4l60e does have a 40 tooth reluctor, its not something that would be usually retrofitted in a swap. If you pick up a 4l60e, it will already have this on the output shaft. It doesn't matter what vehicle it was sourced from, it will be 40 tooth (40ppm pulse) no matter what.

The only time you would need to swap the reluctor would be if you are using a non "e" 4l60 or the 700r4, which has a differnt gear and is off by a factor of 10. Or if you wanted to swap a manual, you can use the 40 tooth reluctor in place of the 17 tooth one that would come on something like a T56, so it reads out correctly.

Re: 4l60 tranny hard shifting sometimes

brew city is correct. I was brain farting. I have made and installed vss wheels in non gm lsx installs with non gm transmissions. the 4l60e would already have this. only instance you would have a lsx/gm electronic auto trans problem would be like a 4wd conversion and using say a 4l80e to np205 transfer case that did not have a vss other than in 1991. happy motoring. brew you must live on here... lol

Re: 4l60 tranny hard shifting sometimes

Kind of similar. Didn't want to make a new thread.

I had my 4L60 rebuilt about a month ago, and i never had kickdown in overdrive. It would never kickdown to 3rd gear and it would shift softly.

Now, after fiddling with the TV cable, it shifts alot harder (Should it? It had a corvette servo, shift kit, etc.), it kicksdown. My only worry is when it shifts. Should it shift into first at 15-20 MPH at not WOT or hard throttle?
