AC Compressor

74 C10 350 w/factory air. For the past 12 months I am currently on my 4th 4 Seasons/Everco New compressor. They are either no good or leaks oil. Wanting to find out what other people are using with success. (luckily I got the lifetime warranty).

I installed a complete new system maybe a year or more ago - bought most parts at O'Reilly Auto Parts. The compressor is a Murray, and I have had no problems, and it is COOOOLD!

Forgot to mention it is an A6. Replaced condenser, evaporator, accumulator, orifice tube, hoses. In other words, has all new components.

Was it the A6? Was it new or re-manufactured?

It is an A6 and it is re-manufactured.

Thanks for the link. Not sure about reman ones. Heard lots of stories about them not working very well even though the new ones I have gotten have not worked well at all.

My local a/c shop recommends a Sanden compressor and a new parallel flow condensor, plus all of the normal replacement parts (orifice tube, drier, etc.).
Alma Products makes "new" A6 compressors, and they claim to have fixed the problem of the compressor throwing oil. You can visit their website and find the details. A6 compressors are still used on heavy equipment and farm machinery, probably because of the greater cooling ability than the Sandens. The new Alma A6s are compatible with 134A refrigerant.

The A6 on my 83 has a knocking piston, but since I can still get adequate cooling from the old A6 with a slightly higher idle speed, I am keeping it as is.

Wondering if the R4 compressors are reliable. And if it is worth the trouble to convert?

Never use remanufactured A/C compressors, not worth it due to the cost of doing the job over again, even if the replacement compressor is free....and always flush the system throughly.

I would really wonder if you have R12 oil in your system still contaminating things and ruining your compressor; that seems more likely than 4 compressors in a row going bad. A cheap fix to try would be to replace your accumulator again (as oil tends to catch in the accumulator), run a/c cleaner spray through all your hoses, then vacuum the whole system out real good before charging.
