Re: 83 K10 Survivor Project

Awesome I'll check tomorrow for the spacer.

In big news, I put down a deposit on a TBI 350 out of a 1990 wrecked 1500 today. The owner says he will pull it and I'll get it later next week. I should get all the serpentine belt accessories and such as well, I told him to remove it cleanly and not cut wires/etc. They seem like good people who will come through.

This morning I replaced the front brake lines, calipers, and pads. Getting her closer to being street drivable.

Re: 83 K10 Survivor Project

Making some progress - full running TBI engine, ECM, wire harness, and a good 700R-4

I like where you are going on this build so far. Trying to keep it close to period look is nice. I also like what you did with the rims and tires.

Re: 83 K10 Survivor Project

Thanks for the comments guys.

I'm debating whether to have the engine gone through. I know it runs and it's clean, the truck it came out of was very clean (and full of NRA/Military stickers - good sign).

The guys who removed it did a good job given their working conditions but nicked a few things - distributor housing, broke some of the sensors, bend the crankshaft pulley. nothing that's a show stopper but annoying little issues.

Might go up to HF and get a crane and engine stand, and put her in the garage for a clean up job. Hopefully the wife doesn't get too pissed.

That's the goal - from the outside, it looks like it would when new. The engine will be period correct, and will start and run reliably with TBI. No more pumping the gas, flooded carb, bs. A good friend was discouraging me from tackling that part, but my memory of these trucks is from the TBI 350 ones, the distinctive engine sounds, etc. That's my goal.

If the engine was in good running order, at the bare minimum I would replace the real main seal before you drop it in the truck. The other things can be cleaned up or addressed down the road.

Re: 83 K10 Survivor Project

Been picking up some parts on ebay/CL as I find them.

Tonight I started looking at the TBI wire harness I have. I've been able to match up most of the connectors, which is good. And the harness looks good, no cuts or splices. Which is real good.

Here's some questions I have, and any answers are appreciated:
1. Where can I get stock-style braided fuel lines?
2. What should I do about the VSS?
3. What is the connector (6 prong) beside the ECM connectors?
4. How do I hook up an ALDL to this?
5. Does anything need to change with the fusebox?

Yes, it's my first "rodeo" at this.

Thanks MTCK, that was helpful and a good read.

Also, I have set of used factory fuel lines on the way.

Re: 83 K10 Survivor Project

Still gathering parts - got a ALDL connector from a pick-n-pull the other day out of a 1998 C1500.

Let's hope that I can start putting it back together soon - and get a new drivetrain in.

Re: 83 K10 Survivor Project

Lots of detail on the wiring.

I might be putting the same engine in my Jeep soon since I have one on a stand in the corner of the shop and I just broke my current 5.2 last weekend.

Re: 83 K10 Survivor Project

Still gathering parts - I have full fuel tanks, some used hardline fuel lines (still working on this part), lots of small pieces.

And this is the current question - what is this connector off the harness for? it's on the inside - I'm thinking it's a wire to the cluster/ALDL connection??? It has 6 pins.

Re: 83 K10 Survivor Project

Had a good weekend working on the truck. First, I pulled it up on the driveway to pressure wash the undercarriage. Carbs suck, I ran the battery down cranking it Friday night - no amount of pedal would get it started. Charged up battery, and started right up on Sat and ran good. On Sunday it ran ok so I moved it behind the wifes' car to clean up. After cleaning, it wouldn't start and stay running again (and wife wanted to go to the store). Finally, I got it back off the driveway and can't wait to get this engine swap done.

Spent some time getting the wire harness connected with all the sensors and marking them down.

One main difference - the new harness is missing the two connections to the upper windshield washer motor. I believe it's the PULSE function - is this correct????

In this picture, you can see the gas lines I got that I'll need to tie into the under cab lines.

Here, I've redone the right door panel. The saddle paint I got (SEM) is darker than original but we both like it.

ON the harness, the AC compressor high pressure switch looks different than what I'm expecting. Anyone have a picture of this hooked up?

Re: 83 K10 Survivor Project

Also, I have dual fuel tanks. Do I need two fuel relays? (Harness has provision for one)

Re: 83 K10 Survivor Project

Nice truck! I have almost the same truck (83' k10 with TBI).

You are correct about that plug. There is a harness that plugs into it and goes under the dash to the drivers side. I can't remember specifically if it goes to the cluster, but that sounds right. It's been a few years since I wired mine. I used a complete wire harness from a 89' Suburban.

There is just one fuel pump relay for dual tanks. The trucks you see with two relays have a th400. The extra relay is for the kick down.

Re: 83 K10 Survivor Project

Got lucky yesterday at a local JY. Got the coil wire I was missing and found three solid donors (94 Suburbans) that I will go back and pick for the interior harness.

One even had a 454 - still thinking about grabbing that but the TBI is missing.

My rig with dual tanks only has one relay. Believe the switch directs the high current side of the relay.

thats no big deal. The TBI is the same for 4.3,5.0, 5.7 and 454. Just the injectors are different.
