Has anyone used a van column

I can buy a van tilt column cheap. Just wondering how well it will work in my brothers 59?

The early to mid 70's Chevy Van column will work fine. I have one in my 55 210 and also putting one in my 58 Chevy truck. They are column shift, tilt, and the ignition is not on the column.

My understanding is that the IDIDIT and Flaming River columns are actually copies of the van columns.

Sorry to resurrect a thread, but has anyone figured out how to use this column w/ a 4L60E? I'm banging my head on the wall trying to make the shift linkage work and so far, nothing much to show for it.

You would have to make your own indicator but I'd think that the shifter would still work the gears ok.

I went the other way in an 82 Cad Deville that I bought with no engine in it and put a 79 425 and turbo 400 in. My wife and daughter blew the engine up because they were running down the freeway at 70 in 2nd gear thinking they were in drive though a I didn't have the linkage adjusted right.

Trick, I'm finding, is I need a pivot to reverse the throw direction from column to 4L60E. Apparently (just learned this now) GM's cars w/ column shift & 700R4 used a frame mounted bracket-jobber. I'm probably going to try and build my own, as store bought solutions are $130 - $300.

Putting one in my 56 GMC. It was out of a 71 GMC VAN test fit, massaged Original drop-down nice fit. Filled in the space for the Hydramatic shiftier shaft . Sorry no photos! Also got original Steering Wheel to fit well. Using TH 350 so indicator worked. mounted to Original GMC power Steering Gear box. In pieces right now for paint.

i used a gm safari column that had a 3 speed prndll throw with a 700r4 that needed a prndlll
by adjusting the length of your shift rods you will get a longer throw to find low gear
then i adjusted n to line up correctly, which made rnd line up correctly, the rest are off a bit
i used allthread rod to set up the initial lengths and then made permanent linkages

I'm getting 1 out of an old 80's custom van. It should be tilt and hopefully it will fit. Friend of mine has an old junk yard, soon as it starts getting a little colder, I'm going over and raid it. Don't feel like fighting wasp and bee's right now.

Do you have any photos? I've got a 74 van column I am going to put in my 51. Need to see how to make the steering rods connect to the MII.

I have a GM C-10 (?) 87 Van tilt column in mine. Fits well but needed rebuilt See pics in attached build link. Many of the original functions can be retrofitted to your vehicle like turn signals, hazards, wipers, cruise, neutral safety, dimmers and best of all at least a wheel lock. Can get fancy and add back the key in ignition and seat belt alarms. My Orig 54's had none of these.
