Carb choke wiring question

As some of you know, I am pulling off my edelbrock carb & intake and going back to a quadrajet & stock intake.

My question is, with the edelbrock choke, I was running a wire tapped into the wiper motor white wire, which is what I was told to do.

I do not know where the original wire is or even where it comes from. Can I use this same wire hookup on the electric choke of the quadrajet, or is there a better place to run the wire for it from?

Thanks
Tommy Davis

Tommy,

I may be wrong, but I believe that the choke is powered by a wire fed by one of the two oil pressure senders at the back of the block. This ensures that the choke is only powered when the engine is actually running. Otherwise, your choke would be able to heat up and open with just the key in the "on" position, leading to the choke opening prematurely if you didn't start the engine right away...

Good luck!

I had my choke wire to the wipers on my old truck since i got the thing...but he's right...you probably want it on the oil pressure sender as I found out one day when me and some friends were having a picnic and had my key on for the accessories (stereo) so we had some tunes and then went to start it when we were all leaving and it wouldn't start. Kinda sucks sitting there under the hood holding the choke closed so the damn thing can idle and get up to temp...lol

choke wiring

I looked down at the oil sending unit. Looks like they put 2 of them down there when they installed my engine a few years ago. One is horizontal with the ground and has 2 prongs on it.
The other is vertical and one prong on it. It looks like a gold cylinder. Not sure if that one is supposed to be there. I looked in a chilton and they are not telling me what the 2nd one is. All of the wires are broken down there, so I am going to have to find out where the wires originally started and see if I can put some in and hopes it works.

The gold cylinder with one tab is for your oil pressure gauge. The two tab is the oil pressure switch. This is what you hook the power wire for the choke to. One tab is in and the other is out to the choke.
