Still turn signal lever?

I have 87 Silverado with the cruise control on the turn signal lever. Also the wiper function is there.

Turning on the turn signal is pretty stiff. It also makes a loud "Clack!" which makes me wonder about the durability. Makes me wonder if one of those times, that clack is going to signal it breaking and the turn signal being stuck on until I fix it.

I am curious to know if this is something that has gone wrong (possibly due to age) or if these trucks were this way when new. But I can say that this turn signal lever, is the hardest to activate that I've ever seen. Maybe there is some where in the turn signal mechanism, that needs to be re-greased? Don't really know of a way to make operating this mechanism easier. Input would be much appreciated.

Re: Still turn signal lever?

There is a spring loaded lever inside that provides the tension along with a grease that makes it smooth. The grease is most likely no longer on the parts that slide against each other. If you pull the column apart, there is almost always a little inside that you can move into place. (calling it grease may be the wrong term)

When i had mine apart, I bent the spring back a little and now i do not have enough tension.

hen i took mine apart there was plenty inside. Not sure if it is oem or not. Maybe i should call it a wax instead. Grease would likely separate and make a mess when hot.

Once you pull it apart, you will see the spring/lever. Incredibly basic.
