power brake booster question
Do power brake boosters ever go bad? At the moment, money is tight for the truck, but I need to install my brake booster. The booster itself worked fine when it was pulled, and it appears to be in excellent shape, at least on the outside. Can/should I clean it up, repaint it, and use it....or buy a new one?
Not trying to cut corners, just not sure if this is pretty common or if most would spend the money on a new one. Anyone buy a new one lately, how much do they go for and where did you get yours at?

I got one about a year ago for about $80 from Car Quest. Yes they can go bad, but you can easily tell with a few simple tests. Just search the web for testing a brake booster and try it on yours.

usually you will hear a hissing sound when you hit the brakes. I would clean up the one you have. I am guessing you will be installing a new master cylinder. If it is bad, you can unbolt the master cylinder without having to disconnect the lines, and move it forward. Replacing just the booster is pretty easy, if you need to do it later.

A guy has a web site with some info...
http://www.73-87.com/7387garage/chas...on/booster.htm Seriously, though, I have had one go bad in the past. I am a little suspicious of mine. None of the tests I have done indicate that it is bad, but I get very little boost out of it. Slonaker |

Listen here butt clowns.
I wasn't asking how to test it...that would be kind of hard to do with the state Yeller is in now. I was just asking what you guys would do if you were me. I ended up buying a new one...the foam (dirt shield) on mine was rotted away, and the more I wire brushed the old one the more I realized unless I took it to bare metal, the paint would never stick.

Well, very briefly... Slonaker |
