3 Speed Column Rebuild

I just rebuilt my three speed column from two donor columns i got from board members. My old column bearings went bad and the shifter housing started to go out. i wanted to build a good column and just swap them out.

I ordered my bearings from LMC or Classic Parts, cant remember, but the lower bearing is an AC Delco & GM Part #3981935, the upper bearing is gm#5679205, and the lower spring is gm#7804771.

I have some left over parts that you cant buy retail, free to a good home. If someone wants them or has questions PM me.

Just to throw it out there....
I stripped the old paint from the column with aircraft paint remover (from advanced auto) and then used Rustoleum's autobody primer as a base/primer. It adhered very well to the sheet metal column and the pot-metal shifter housing. after that you can lay whatever color down you want.


This is not a difficult thing to do and thanks for posting the pics, i forgot to document how i rebuilt mine.

The only thing I couldnt find was the rubber bushings that go into the two shift levers on the bottom of the column that connect to the shift rods. Everything else was available.

Those rubber bushings for the shift arms are avaliable from classic parts. you need to reuse the original metal sleeve/spacer.

Thats where i got mine too. they have the transmission linkage bushings too.

WOW! Sorry for the NEVER update guys! I'm a huge procrastinator and completely forgot about this thread.

Ok, I sold the truck that I was having issues with, so the donor column is still torn apart in my basement. I still have a 70 longbed that it will go in when finished. I used the 3 speed adjustment article and it solved my shifting problems so I just dealt with the column slop issues. Then got overall burnt out on the truck so she's gone. Now I'm looking for another. Found a 72 shortbed automatic truck I may trade my 57 VW for, but we'll wait and see what happens on that one. In the meantime I'll try to get motivated and update this thread soon. Sorry again for slacking.

I would like to rebuild my shifter at some point, no desire to get rid of 3OTT.

I am new here so I may have missed this if previously covered. I have a 64 C10 and am having issues with the 3OTT (sloppy shifting if I can find the gears), and would prefer to stay stock, or as close to as possible.

I took it into my mechanic and he says he will need the following parts:
Two- 3771727 Lever Assembly
One- 3773472 Tube Assembly

These parts numbers from the catalog (page linked) are obsolete. If anyone has any direction, I would appreciate it. I have contacted classicparts to no avail and waiting to hear back from oldchevytrucks.

Hi oldchevy. Just stumbled across your post, know its a bit old. I rebuilt a 1969 3OTT column for my 61 last spring (has a collapsible shaft to prevent impalement in accident). Not sure if the shift tube is the same between those years or not, but when I was looking for parts, there was a NOS shift tube for sale on Ebay, for about $100 if I recall. I got the GM part number from my local dealership parts counter (they still have the old parts books) and then googled the part number. The lever closest to the end is a separate piece (can sometimes find for sale on this site, or try Ebay), the lever above it is all in one piece with the shift tube, IIRC.
