speedo & tach
Has anyone looked at using camaro 2010 or 2011 tach & speedo in one of our clusters?
I was looking at 81 tach install but prices are through the roof. Thanks |

Re: speedo & tach
the new gauges are all CANBUS stuff, so unless you had the engine ECM, and BCM to go with it you wont be able to make it work. Even if you did, you would have to use the whole cluster, not just the individual gauges. I think that '81 Camaro tach option was only really a good idea back when the salvage yards were full of those cars. Those days are over and now people who have the older Camaros need the tachs because they burn up and stop working all the time. Your best bet now days is to just get a reproduction truck tach IMHO.

Re: speedo & tach
I've been thinking of going to a newer ls (gen4) with can bus and my cluster has the ls1nova71 mods already in place and i thought that dakota digital has a converter box to drive these??

Re: speedo & tach
I didn't mention in my question that my 70 has the GM 'connect and cruise' package which has a speedo and tach wire available. I am using the speedo wire on a dakota digital ecd-100 to drive a mechanical speedo that I got from LMC which has just stopped working. I haven't had the chance to trouble shoot.
I am going to try to put in an S10 speedo with the ls1nova71 mods in a gauge cluster I just acquired. Would like to put in a tach at same time. Most of the after market tachs don't seem to look right. |

Re: speedo & tach
I did the 8000 aftermarket tach conversion to my ls1nova modded cluster and love the look and function. Remember that the cluster lens gets the mph numbers wiped clean and stenciled over with new numbers so if the 8000 tach kit is of your approval, get the kit when you get the s-10 cluster to mod.

Re: speedo & tach
The tach kit is for a stock 67-72 dash cluster. The stock original one was red lined at about 5,000 rpm's. When i first drove my ls change i spun the tach around and was screwed up after that. Brother's, lmc, gmc paul's, etc sell the stock cluster conversion, and about 3 years ago a 8,000 rpm redline tach kit came out, being sold by the above vendors and others because of the higher revving ls.
It has the same font, color, and style of the original. It is so good at first glance you don't even really notice the higher redline. Just purchase it BEFORE you do the s-10 speedo conversion because you will be working with the lens. |
