How does one swap out the rubber gasket on the heater box?

Probably a silly question, but does this gasket just fit on with some sort of caulk? If so, what is best to go back with?

Does it fit into a groove?

*Talking about the round gasket on the right here that fits up against the firewall.

It just seals against the big hole on the firewall. No sealant needed.

Thanks but I think the question was misunderstood. It's clear there wasn't a sealant against the firewall but what makes it stick to the heater box?

use a little hi tack just to keep it in place

I picked up some tacky strip stuff from a metal roofing company here locally. It's used where two peices of metal pro panel overlap. I have not used it yet but that's what was recommended by a friend of mine.

I like black super weatherstrip adhesive. It just takes a little bit.

Yeah, for stuff like that I use weatherstrip adhesive to hold it in place. I used to use hi-tack, but that takes longer to tack-up.

the aftermarket ones ive seen and used are actually shaped a little different than the original but work just as well. i just got a skinny piece of duct tape on the top to hold the gasket in place and when i got it bolted i removed the tape before tightening the bolts

One thing about them heater boxes best off to clean them paint them get the gaskets and put a new motor from a AC unit ones instead of the heater only its blows harder and warms up the truck faster.

In my next one i do i will buy the AC controller for my none AC cab I found out that the blower motor switch is easier to replace then the broken arms are on the heater only plus you get to light bulbs to light up your Dash on ether side.

I've done one and it worked out grate.Some ask me where is the AC is i told them I wanted the AC controller cus it was better made then the heater one is.Plus i like to set my levers to the way i want them less moving parts.The only thing I have to move is the 3 speed motor switch the Heater one only has a 2 speed.

So I'm very happy with my little modified Controller for my heater cab only.

And for you guys that have panels or suburbans using the AC controller unit bolts right in place of the heater one you just don't use 1 cable

I put my heater box in last night and there's some great tips on this thread. I took a hybrid approach a little hi-tack to hold the gasket in place and some masking tape around the outside. Worked great, the hardest part was getting the tape off once the box was installed.

I used plumbers putty and it works great. Roll it into a small rope and apply it to the box then after tightening the box just trim off the excess with a knife.
