What is this?

Well, when removing the hoses, my dad broke one of the outlet/inlets on this grey thing.

He just rerouted some of the hoses and now nothing is connected to it.

He's a mechanic, so I'm sure whatever he did makes sense to him. But I have NO CLUE what that is, or what it did before. And he just kept saying. "You don't need it."

So what was it, and what did it do before?

its a temp operated vac. tree. if you strip your truck of all emissions, you can do without it as well. get an aftermarket chrome waterneck with out the tree.

Probably something to do with emissions. Most people have probably done away with them too.

Ah...ok. Cool.
I have no cats as of Sunday, so my emmisions don't matter

I'd get the chrome waterneck...but since I don't plan on keeping this engine longer than a year...there's no point

Thanks guys.

I would check and see what the lines go to.
Like said above is a thermal vacuum switch.
It doesnt allow vacuum to pass through unless the engine has reached operating temp.
Usually hooked to things like egr.
Just to be safe check what is connected to it.

I agree that its pretty much useless even if the system was working correctly to begin with. To hell with the chrome neck it would look out of place and wouldnt be as high quality as the OEM one anyways, and would end up leaking... just get a pipe plug and plug that hole, it will look factory
