clearance for a HEI dist.

My 65 GMC has a 283 installed by the previous owner. It has the point dist. and coil. I would like to replace those with a HEI dist. but it looks like there may not be enough clearance at the firewall. Has anyone done this without doing any modification to the firewall ?

Re: clearance for a HEI dist.

Are you sure it is points and not like a MSD Ready to run?
Or up graded to electronic under cap? Pictures?

Its a tight fit. In most cases you have to install the distributor without the cap. Then there should be just enough room to get the cap on. You will need to get a bit creative with the plug wire routing for the rearward terminals because they have to point out to the sides.

Re: clearance for a HEI dist.

Only an inch or so of room. Had to mount the distributor first then the cap. Had to crawl into the engine by to attach the plug wires to the cap.

Re: clearance for a HEI dist.

An HEI will fit no problem with a small block in it's original rearward location. As already said, you have to remove the cap and rotor to install the distributor. Not a big deal at all.

Re: clearance for a HEI dist.

That's because someone moved it to the forward location unnecessarily.

Way more fun with a roots blower to block your way.

Re: clearance for a HEI dist.

It is just a stock type / point dist. Thanks for the information. I think I'll go for it. The access door on the firewall is really cool idea.
