Re: How do you confirm matching numbers on a 72 k5?

All you can do is break down build dates and date codes on your components and see if things match up in sequence.
You can match the frame to the VIN and the glove box door...(if the glove box door spid isn't a repro or missing)

Here are code examples from my Blazer: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...8&postcount=60

I believe the protect-o-plate also has the engine code embossed onto it.

Is a three letter suffix code present? See here for decoding info: http://www.nastyz28.com/sbchevy/sblock.html

I will go double check tomorrow but I think there is not one.

What does that mean?

Re: How do you confirm matching numbers on a 72 k5?

If original it will have a suffix code. Not sure if applicable in your instance or not but per that same website linked above:

"VF292800 - is an example of a over the counter crate engine. "2800" is the last 4 digits of the GM part # for the crate engine assembly. The final digit could be a year code.
Another example: A Targetmaster engine (p/n 14009800) built in 1985 could have a code stamped as follows:
A0198005 (A = january, 01, 9800 = pn, 5 = 1985)."

My green Blazer has a warranty replacement motor/block with a code that begins with "CE..." for counter exchange

Re: How do you confirm matching numbers on a 72 k5?

I a told its a 77-78 block stamping so it must have been replaced. That sucks since I was told it was original.
Now do I rebuild this or do a LS swap since its way off anyway?

Re: How do you confirm matching numbers on a 72 k5?

You're right, that block casting is a late 70's 350. The stamping Deadhead is referring to is in front of the right cylinder head, just above the water pump mounting. He has a good pic in his link. You never know it could be a "Corvette" engine

Free from the albatross of an original motor might as well go LS IMO with an OD transmission.
