Seat adjuster won't release on passenger side.

So I took the seat out to clean under it and realized that the lever that releases the seat works on the driver side but the only way to get the passenger side to release is to reach under and grab the cable and pull. This thing looks like its about 6 inches too long.

I've been searching the forum for about 45 minutes and coming up empty.

I know I'm missing something. How is this thing supposed to work?

Re: Seat adjuster won't release on passenger side.

The wire should run through a hog ring or 2 in the front of seat. So from the lever (at left in your picture) down (in your picture) to the middle 1-2 hog rings that hold the upholstry on, and THEN over to the passenger side. That will eat up the extra length on the wire, and disengage the passenger track at a better angle.

Alternatively, replace the wire with a new, shorter wire.

See this post for a picture of the wire running up thru a hog ring or 2 and then back down to the passenger side disengagement.

Thanks bilndbug. I already put the seat back in. It'll eventually need to be reupholstered anyway. I'll figure it out then.

Re: Seat adjuster won't release on passenger side.

I have not yet done this on my 83, because the seat adjuster is working OK, but on my 76 I got a threaded screen door tensioning rod kit from the hardware store. This is the kind of diagonal two piece rod you see on old wooden screen doors, with an adjustable turnbuckle in the middle. I fitted the two ends of the rods with the holes to into the seat adjusters on both ends of the seat. I can't remember exactly how I did it. I then screwed the two threaded ends of the rods into the turnbuckle and turned it until the rod was fairly tight.
It worked much better that the stock thin wire set up.

You do give up a little underseat space, because the rod hangs down farther than the stock wire, but the wire hanging down always hung up on whatever I put under the seat anyway.

I don't recall the length I used, but here is a link to the type of product to which I refer:

Blindbug is correct. Here is a pic for reference. So I could get a good close up of the wire, where it attaches to the center of the seat frame, I took a picture of the two halves of the seat. You also need to replace that broken spring.

Re: Seat adjuster won't release on passenger side.

Thanks guys. I think I should be able to fix it with the seat still in the truck. I'll get that spring when I get the seat recovered. This forum has really helped me with fixing little things with the old truck. Many thanks.
