Re: repro gas neck filler neck issue fix
Everything I have seen says the old neck is needed because of the body mount that is in the way. If you have your old tank, most radiator shops can swap them out

Re: repro gas neck filler neck issue fix
I have not needed to yet but it is apparently a simple solder on procedure from everything I have read.

Re: repro gas neck filler neck issue fix
heres an email i just got from a shop...
Fitting the old neck to the new tank is definitely an option. We always provide the caution to our customers that this type of operation will lead to rust if the tank is not sealed and is used with gasoline containing ethanol. The cost on this type of work can vary depending on whether the tank has been used at all, or is brand new and has never had fuel in it. On the highest side, it can be close to $200, although typically it is just over $150. You may also be able to find a molded fuel hose that will allow you to go around the body mounts. While those might be hard to find through the auto parts stores, you may have better luck with truck parts places. I hope this helps. Thank you, David Arnold 800-321-4278 DonHart.com |

Re: repro gas neck filler neck issue fix
Sounds to me like he does not want to mess with it at that price. I would look for other shops to try

Re: repro gas neck filler neck issue fix
im thinking its a harder job than people think. first one has to have a neck. i didnt so i bought one but it needs repair. old necks arent going to be around forever. then the job has to be done. then according to a shop thats been in business for 60 years, the neck and perhaps the entire tank needs to be coated with something to deal with todays gas. and then theres the poly version of this tank. cant solder to those at all but apparently people are using them so theres got to be a way around the problem.

Re: repro gas neck filler neck issue fix
Im doing this right now. I bought a filler neck from a good guy here on this site. (Thanks Dwayne)
I took it to a welder and he had me take the tank to a radiator shop that specializes in cleaning out fuel tanks. Then I took the tank back to my welder. He is putting the filler neck on right now. When he is done, I will take it back to the radiator shop and have the inside coated so it does not rust. Yeah, its a hassle, but I want the tank right. I will be able to use the stock fuel hose when its done. |

Re: repro gas neck filler neck issue fix
I just moved it forward enough to clear the body mount with the filler hose on. I re-drilled the holes on the frame for the straps. Don’t remember the measurement.

Re: repro gas neck filler neck issue fix
my calibrated eyeball says 2 1/2 inches...that still leaves over 4 inches clearance between the front of the tank and the differential. if it hits ill beat a dent in it with a sledge hammer. ive got lots of exhaust room.
i called a place in dallas, my other home, and that shop said they could relocate the fill neck to another position on the tank. might try that on the next one. if i could move the fill neck forward instead of the whole tank that might be better. i also called a tubing shop. guy said he would try to bend a new neck based on the old one i bought from Dwayne. if that works out then ill probably go that route. all i know is im done messin around. gas tanks are meant to be in a truck holding gas, and not bein a pain |

Re: repro gas neck filler neck issue fix
thanks rg...do you see any real problem with moving the tank forward a couple inches? ive
measured everything twice and i believe theres more than enough clearance for the diff, exhaust, etc. especially since i dont drive my blazer off road very much. |

Re: repro gas neck filler neck issue fix
im also going to try A1971Blazer’s idea of using two formed hoses coupled together
see how well that does. im saving the orginal neck welding until the end |

"Hey, you forgot to mention the guy who gave you the tank for free..jk . Glad to hear your going to be able to use it."
You are right, my bad! Thank you very much, I am finally getting this part of the restoration handled. I really appreciate you giving us the tank. Next we will use the leaf springs.......... |

Re: repro gas neck filler neck issue fix
I had mine done at a radiator shop in Euless, Tx (Miller Muffler & Radiator) and they did it for $85. I took the old tank with the neck still attached and the new tank, which hadn't been used yet.

I would assume they could repair it, but I honestly don't know.

Re: repro gas neck filler neck issue fix
k5max i cant say if your tank needs any kind of coating work done to it. ive talked to a lot of shops that have been in business a while and they have all told me that >>> my <<< tank should have some sort of coating after the neck is soldered on. why i really dont know but i would guess its got to do with the amount of water in todays gas. newly soldered parts may need to be better protected from...something...in the gas. my best advice would be consult a tank specialist whos been in business a while and ask about your specific tank.
