What turn signal switch do i have?

I have a 1965 GMC pickup. It came from the factory with a manual transmission and a 6 cylinder engine. At some point in its life a v8 and a power glide transmission was swapped into it. The column had to have been switch for the power glide. It has a "GM factory" looking steering column it. Is not a tilt column. You shift the transmission on the column. Has the right gear selectors letters for a power glide.

I need to replace the turn signal switch. The one that is in the truck has a flat wire harness clip. 3 3/4 long. Only uses about half of the pockets in the clip. Wires are white, orange, yellow, purple, dark blue, light blue and black.

I ordered a new switch from Classic Industries part number SM202. This is what the guy on the phone said I needed. Told him GMC and year.

The switch they send looks like the old switch but does not fit, work.
On the old switch the wire harness plugs into the switch above the pivot on the cam. The wires are purple, orange, dark blue, white, light blue yellow.

The new switch has the wire harness plugs into the switch below the pivot on the cam. The wires are purple, light blue, with, dark blue, yellow, green.

The new switch will not fit into the housing. wrong bolt pattern holes, wires will not fit in the opening in the back of the housing, hole for the turn level handle in the wrong place.

After reading all of that? Do I have an odd steering column out of a different year GM truck. Did they send the wrong switch? any help would be great

Re: What turn signal switch do i have?

I have a 65 GMC as well and experienced the same problem with Classic Parts. I called and talked to their person who said " you have received the correct switch " I gave up and called Brothers. Got the correct switch

Re: What turn signal switch do i have?

That is the one that NAPA said fits every truck. I have held that part in my hand. Does not match anything of the switch I have.

You have 7 wires on each. They are the same colors and they all do the same thing. You can cut them and splice them together and it should work fine. This is up to you if you want to go that route. You might want to make sure it bolts up in your column first.

Re: What turn signal switch do i have?

Its not the color of the wires. Its not the style of clip on the end of the wires. The switch as it goes into the column is a mirrored part. Ever thing about it is backwards.
It took a week to get the " new switch" after being told by a company that it was the right part. Going to call them after work Tuesday and see what they have to say. If not going to see if I can track down the part from Brothers as told by Hotrodder to try. Just do not want this to turn into a 3 week waiting for UPS to drop off parts thing. I have been told a few things I do not know if right or wrong. One thing I was told is that all GMC trucks with this body style use the switch from 62 chevy.
If you go to classic industries web site. Put in the info for 1965 gmc truck. The part numbers that come up is the one I got. They sent a catalog with my order. You look in the catalog they have a different part number for a 1965 gmc truck.
What I was hoping was to have someone from this site over the weekend give me some help, info as to if I have a 1965 gmc part. If they had the same problem, what they did about it.

Re: What turn signal switch do i have?

This might help, go to http://www.bobschevytrucks.com and search for SM197, then search the site for SM202 as a comparison. The SM197 might be what you're looking for.

Re: What turn signal switch do i have?

The '60-'66 GMC's did use the same dash switches and knobs as well as the ash tray from the '60-'63 Chevy's. I do not know what they used for the turn signal switch. They may have used a switch for the '63 Chevy.

Your getting a ton of bad info. GMC used its very own turn signal switch from 1963-1966 and its not from a 62 Chevy . Chevy used the 1963 switch for both car and truck and a different design for 1964-1966 car and truck. GMC was more of a heavy duty switch and is not available through the aftermarket . With your "mix of parts" and no actual pictures its difficult to figure out, but I suggest skipping all these truck suppliers and go right to the source , Call American auto wire , google it , and ask for Don Bock . If he cant figure out what you need no one can. Make sure you tell him what year column you have and that its from a Chevy and exact year of your GMC truck.

Re: What turn signal switch do i have?

And what picture have I not given you to look at? I talked to the people at classic. The salesman said they buy the switches from American auto wire. Gave me the auto wire part numbers. I call auto wire. They say they do not make that part number, sell to classic. They say the part number is made in china. So right now I have a switch on order that is listed for 65 gmc and the picture for that part shows the harness on the correct side of the pivot. Using help from hotrodders post. The picture you are showing would be better if I had view from the back side. Will know in a few days.

Don't dispute 60-66 as he is a master of these tks. All you are talking to is the salesmen on these parts sits. GMC is an odd-ball.

The picture of your column. I gave you a name , one with knowledge and experience on this subject that can answer your question. Good luck with your truck.

This statement is meaningless when pin pointing turn signal switches for a '60-'66 Chevy or GMC pickups. Switches are year and make specific. Where are your photos of the column details? Need additional photos of column without steering wheel attached and photo of hole of where turn signal lever enters to determine what year column was swapped in. 60-66 has more knowledge of '60-'66 truck parts than most of your aftermarket suppliers put together.
