and found a note that says #12611129 deflector is not needed for swaping a truck pan. they are the same part. hmmm who knew?

I'm swapping to an LM4 and have a F body oil pan, but stumped on what to do with the new dipstick. From what I can tell, the new pan doesn't have any place for the dipstick.

Can anybody clarify this issue for me?

Dipstick doesn't go in the pan on an F body. Your engine should have a place for the dipstick in the block, that may or may not be drilled for it. If it's drilled for it, it will have a tiny freeze plug looking thing in it that you can knock out, but since your other thread you make it sound like it's an older engine, they sometimes aren't drilled for it. Drilling it isn't hard if the engine isn't in the vehicle though.

Thanks for the input ls1nova, I looked the block over again last night and the truck oil pan is where the dipstick is located and because this engine came out of a 4wd Envoy, it's a front sump oil pan (see attached pic).

I'll have to look the motor over to see if I can find the location for the dipstick. The motor is out of the vehicle currently, which is why I'd prefer to address these issues before putting it in my truck.

I'm trying to figure out how to address the dipstick issue before I install the engine.

This is a 2002 Camaro LS1, but truck blocks are pretty similar.

Well this is typical, because this is an LM4 block, it's going to be just different enough to cause issues...case in point the dipstick tube.

I've been researching and apparently this particular block has no hole for the dipstick tube. Plus this particular vehicle was 4wd so it had the front sump pan.
So I purchased the f body oil pan which came with dipstick and tube, which means the dipstick location will relocate towards the rear of the block. Which is a good thing because with the current setup, my Dirty Dingo engine mounts hit the dipstick tube.

Now I just need to figure out exactly where to drill a hole and what size. Anybody else dealing with issues like this?

You don't need to order the o-ring or the gasket. They come with the pan/pick up tube. Just picked all of my parts up at the dealer. $340 with tax.

OK, so I was looking around my motor over the weekend and I hope I located some good news.

Some people have said there should be a provision for the dipstick tube on the block, but the hole needs to be drilled.

I'm hoping this is the location of where I need to drill the hole for the dipstick with my new F Body oil pan. Am I correct? It's located right behind the front of the starter. If it is the location, then hopefully the dipstick tube won't interfere with any wiring or something and all will fit.

Yes, that is the spot, you can compare it to the pic I posted earlier. The hole, although probably metric is really close to 3/8, so a bit that size should work. The O ring on the dipstick will seal it. Drill with a smaller bit first and work your way up, don't start out with a 3/8 or you probably wont have very good results.

Thanks ls1nova71 for the info. I had measured the original dipstick hole and came up with 3/8 also, so I'm glad you were able to confirm that.

I'll start with a pilot hole and work my way to the 3/8 bit.

I'm planning to do that this weekend while I swap out oil pans.

Good that's one hurdle that's been cleared now!
