Grindie feeling when you turn wheel?

I would get a pair of mechanic's stethoscopes and have a friend turn the wheel back and forth while I listened to the various components. Don't for get the lower steering column bearing. (Which where my bet is placed. They fail or come loose at times). If you can feel the grinding there should be no problem hearing it with a stethoscope. I have also had some success using a wooden dowel (instead of the stethoscope) to locate those evil sounds.
