Sorry for the delay. Just wanted to thank everyone for all the help and guidance. It has been amazing networking with you. I will keep you posted on the project. Captainfab, you have been a mountain of resource, and I thank you for the effort you have put into helping me with this rear end. I will be purchasing 30.5 length axles for this rear, along with a new 30 spline posi carrier and all the internal parts to go along with it. Sorry to dig up an old thread - but this question I have might be pertinent to the other information that is already in here...
WHAT YEAR did they switch from using the 17 spline pinion and axle to the 30 spline pinion and axle? I noticed that no one made mention so far of the early 12-bolt pinion also having 17 splines - they did. I have an axle that supposedly came out of a '65 model chevy truck, but it has 17 spline parts in it. I have also noticed that the wheel bearing/axle seal bore on this axle is just slightly smaller than a later model 12-bolt. Can anyone confirm this fact and also let me know what year they made the switch? |

I am not 100% on this but from what I have seen 65 was the change over year. Early 65 can have either and later 65 will be 30spline. 65 should also be the year the panard bar was relocated.

The '63 and '64 12 bolts both had the 17 spline side gears and axles. These also had the panhard bar bracket on the passenger side axle tube. The first year for the truck 12 bolt was 1963. These can be identified by the pressed on brake backing plates. In '64 they went to a flange welded to the axle tube and the backing plates bolted on. It has been many years since I have had to replace the axle bearings or seals on a '63-'64 12 bolt, but it does seem like they are slightly different.

Jeremy here. It's been a long time since I've been here. Some of you knew i was restoring a 63' C10 LWB over here in Germany (383 stroker, 700R4, original 12 bolt 17 spline with original posi, original Balboa Blue color), and many of you helped with questions I had. I thank y'all so much (especially Captainfab, Lucifer). Last year the restoration was complete (6 years restoration). I got an A1 classification on the restoration from Classic Data. Was very proud of that. However, two weeks later while on a trip from Germany to Sweden, the truck (Jeddy) was stolen off the Bella Sky Hotel in Kopenhagen, Denmark. Jeddy has never returned. Info can be found on: - type in google (Jeremy Franklin og Yvonne Franklin) You can see everything we did to find our beloved Jeddy Since then, I have purchased another 63' C10 SWB from World Wide Vintage Autos in Denver, and had it shipped over here to Germany. I have since torn it down to the frame, fire zinked the frame, tubular control arms, sand blasted all body parts and now starting body work. Pretty much doing the same to Jeddy II as I did to Jeddy I. I've already got (for Jeddy II): -Built 540 BBC (733 HP/730 NM Torque) from Big Al's ToyBox in CT (thank you Al) -Built TH400 (manual valve) again, Big Al's -Built 9 inch rear w/ 3.55 TRUE-TRAC posi, Sportman Gear Case - Race Pinion Support AND 1330-Short Yoke - will be making many BIG parts orders to Summit again (thank you Summit Racing) Wish you all well and keep ya up to date. How are you? Hope all is ok. Yes, the frame has been sandblasted, then dipped in cleaning acid (a 7 times process), then galvanized. |

If you guys need any five on five 17 spline axles made up Moser axles can build you a set. I had a set made up for a posi rear end that's going in my 65 with a bbc . Talk to Homan at Moser axles and he will get you fix up
