Crossmember swap woes.72 clip into 64 c10

Guys and Girls,

I pulled my crossmember out of my 64 c10 to swap to a rebuilt setup for a 72.

When I pulled all of the bolts on the 64 c10 crossmember, it didn't just drop out of the truck. I had to pry it a little.. not hard but a little. Now I'm trying to swap the 72 in and I cant get it to slide in. It's like the frame where the crossmember bolts in is like 1/4 inch too wide.

Has anyone run into this before(I'm sure someone has) and what are my options?

Thank you for all of your help!

Chris

Just use a bar clamp or maybe a couple of ratchet straps to squeeze the frame together a little.

Can someone tell me if it is possible to use a crossmember out of an '82 suburban with diesel engine under my '64 with straight 6? Or do I get problems with my motormounts?

You really don't need to do that unless your cross member is bent or something. The later control arms will bolt up to the early cross member.

That is true unless the '64 in question is a C20.

While I have not swapped the suspension crossmember under a truck with a I6, the engine mounts should bolt in. If not, worst case you may have to drill the holes in the crossmember for the lower bolt of the engine mount brackets.

yes.. I am going on the assumption that it is a C 10. I will have to mention that if I ever put my 2 cents in next time.

Thank you Guy's for the info. My truck is a C10. I didn't knew the newer A arms just bolt on the older crossmember. I want to use the diskbrakes of the Burb onder mine.

And you don't have to change the control arms either. You can simply change the upper and lower ball joints to the later model ball joints for the disc brake spindle.
