Re: Converting starter
I'd check to see if a 60 to 62 Starter for a GMC with a 270 would bolt on.
Probably the simple thing is to check the part number on a flywheel ring gear for a 59 270 and one for a 62 or 63 270 and see if they are the same. Rock auto says that the 168 tooth pioneer Frg168T fits - GMC 1000 SERIES 1961-1962 GMC 1500 SERIES 1961-1962 GMC 2500 SERIES 1961-1962 GMC TRUCK 1956-1960 Please refer to catalog for application details. That's a good sign if you have a pickup and not a 2 ton. You may be able to use a 60/62 235 starter too.

Re: Converting starter
Checking the starter for a 61 GMC 1000 shows that it should fit. When you check the compatibility it fits most 236 and 270 engines that came with a 12 V starter https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/b...=Starter&pos=0

Re: Converting starter
This truck is a 250 tow truck that was owned by a Pontiac/Cadillac dealership in Ca until 05. Very nice restoration project that I will make only minimal upgrades on. Thanks for your input. I hate the old foot starter. I have a 53 5 window on an s10 chassis, 6.0, LS 3 heads and intake.
