3700 miles in 5 days
Hi All,
Just got back last night from picking up a couple trucks. The first one is a 72 c20 I bought off of Ebay a while back. It has a 402 with a turbo 400 behind it, and air. The second one is a 67 shortbed just a cab front clip and chassis. I also picked up a set of bed sides, tail gate and header panel for my stepside. It was a lot of miles in a short time but we got to see a lot of country and I got a lot of driving time in my new truck, and I got to meet 2 board members. To start the trip I decided I would rent a car and my brother-in-law and I would drive down and drive the 72 back following with the rental ($130 5 day unlimited milage) and tow the 67 with a tow bar. Instead of getting the 72 in Fortworth and then driving to Houston to pick up the bed sides from Suicide-D (Thanks again Suicide-D) I decided to pick up the bed sides first and then the truck. This meant that they had to fit in the back of a chevy classic along with my tools, floor jack, air tank, luggage, chains, etc.... After picking up the bedsides we drove up to Fortworth and picked up the 72. The truck is in OK shape, runs good (needs carb work) and needs the typical rockers and cab corners. The bad news was that it would not charge, the wiring is a mess (started to burn on the way home), and we had to stop every 100 miles or so to clean out the filter until it stopped picking up dirt. The truck is not exactly pretty, someone bondo'd over all the trim holes and sprayed it with rattle cans. Over all it will make me a good truck. From Fortworth we then drove to Almo Kentucky to pick up the 67 I bought from gutterman. Got the tow bar hooked up and started off (about 2 or 3 miles) and front tire blew. This was on Sunday and no one was open so we ended up staying over and I had 4 used tires mounted up in the morning. We left Almo at about 10:00 AM and got home in Burton Ohio (Near cleveland) at 10:30 PM. All in all it was a great trip and I seen a lot of the country, met some good people, and got some miles on my new truck.

Wow, total gas bill???
I didn't keep track of what I spent on gas, but the truck got about 11-12 MPG. The bed was full of sheetmetal and I was towing another truck with no motor, interior or bed. The Rental was getting around 30MPG(which we beat the snot out of), but I did not check it when loaded. The interesting thing was the price of gas. The farther south we got the cheaper it got. I bought gas from $1.74(Texas) up to $2.05 (In Ohio). I think I spent about $450 on gas, another $250 on hotels, and a couple hundred on food and miscelaneous. Probably $1000 all together, it sounds like a lot, but to have the trucks and all the parts I brought home shipped it would of been at least double that. Gutterman, Yeah, I thought you knew that I had already been to Houston, Fortworth and back. We ended up staying the night at a Holliday inn off of 24 and had an easy drive home. Thanks again.
