Front disc brakes on 61
I have a 1961 GMC stepside pickup with a 305 V6 in it. I’m wondering what is the least expensive way to have front disc brakes installed. Like what do I need to buy. I’d like to do it myself. Thanks for all you guys do with helping us rookies.
Thanks Greg |

Re: Front disc brakes on 61
I went with auto city classics for my 65c10 but they have the same kits for the 61 as well. In my case it was just easier to purchase the kit from one source than cobble it together from different vendors.

Re: Front disc brakes on 61
I got mine from Auto City Classic along with power booster. So far well pleased.
If the 61 is like a 63, you will need new rims or rims off 4 wheel drive to clear brake calipers. |

Re: Front disc brakes on 61
That depends on whether you are wanting a dropped spindle or not and whether you want to keep the torsion bars or not.

Would that result in a better ride?

With torsion bars it won't change as far as the stiffness of the ride because the load on the torsion bars won't change with drop spindles. However, if he does crank the torsion bar keys back up it will change the geometry of the a-arms - which may not be significant - especially if he never had it aligned after he lowered it with the torsion bars before.
