Gauge cluster
I was wondering what the two empty circles on a 60-66 gauge cluster were used for, having not come across a factory guage cluster with a tachometer. Thank you in advance

Re: Gauge cluster
Vacuum, Tachometer I believe. On larger trucks mostly I would think. Since then however we are using them.

Re: Gauge cluster
Yes, the opening on the left was used for either a vacuum or air pressure gauge. The vacuum gauge was available in the medium duty trucks with vacuum assisted hydraulic brakes and the air pressure gauge was used in trucks equipped with air brakes.
The opening on the right was used for the tachometer which was an available option in everything from 1/2 tons up into the medium/heavy trucks. |

Re: Gauge cluster
Hey Rocknrod, I am about to try a potentially expensive mistake and just go for it because I have dreams at night about a full gauge cluster in my 64 SFB and buy the aftermarket Classic Ind. produced Nova tach and clock and hope that with little alteration, I can make them fit into my stock gauge housing. I have a I6 230 and to my knowledge, Chevy didnt offer tachs for our trucks for the 6 but CI has the 6 cyl version. The Nova gauges look like they are almost indistinguishable from the trucks. Any experience or have you ever heard of this before?

Re: Gauge cluster
New to me but very interesting. Many people here would like to find out if they are. Also I had to have mine custom made to be a volt gauge and an sender type oil gauge. I also bought the electric limited sender for the temp gauge, so with my new fuel tank sender I should be "in the mix". Since I am wiring the truck as though it's a fiberglass unit using ground wire everywhere it should read well and the lights should be as good as they can possibly be.

Re: Gauge cluster
Well, I am just going for it. I will definitely post an article on the trial of it. Looking at your minty gauge set up there, I see you had to run the the clock adjuster arm through the lense which you did precisely. I see you have a chrome grommet to protect the plastic lense which the adjuster rides through. What did you use? It looks very factory. Good job!

Re: Gauge cluster
the 60's GM vac gauges (seem to be most common in Pontiacs, but other GMs had them also, just in different casings and with different works cover plates) are a good fit. Here's the cluster I put in a 66 I sold a while back. I made use of some of the other unused (i.e. med duty) openings in the dash as well .
