Re: re-attaching VIN tag

My 57 cab vin was spot welded on and fell off pretty much on its own while sanding the cab.
I had my truck verified by a private company and took the paper work to the DMV as the seller had no pink when I purchased it.
Not sure how I will re attach the tag when done.

Re: re-attaching VIN tag

Always check with your state's DMV, do it the right way and inform any future owners what was done. In Texas, prior to 1955 or so, that VIN tag doesn't count for anything, they used the engine number. In my case, the truck I just bought, I asked if it had a title, was told "yes", but when I went to change the title, I got flagged because the previous owner had swapped to a hot rod 6 and didn't tell anyone. I had to jump through so many red tape hoops it was crazy, and finally had to get a new number assigned, and actually stamp it on my engine and show proof of said stamping to get a bonded title!!!!!!! Guess what I will have to do when I swap to an LS engine???

Be careful

That is why I am glad Mn titled by the body serial number and not the motor. My motor exploded on me. Could you just get a state assigned vin on a state vin tag and be done with it? In Minnesota if you have to get a new vin assigned they install a new tag on your car.

Talking about vins makes me wonder.... My 1950 never had a "vin", just the serial number tag and that was attached with screws from the factory and is still attached with screws today. I just googled and found this http://oldchevytrucks.com/blog/index.php/tag/id-plates/

They started using rivets in 1951 according to the article. It also said the screws would sometimes vibrate loose so people back in the past would rivet them on or take them off. Mine is still screwed on just not with the factory clutch head screws. Has anyone had any trouble with these years? Here in MN we don't have any inspections so Its never been a problem for me.

At last, some accurate information instead of fear mongering. See, there ARE stipulations whereby one can legally remove and restore VIN plates. If it's "necessary for repair" and it's "not furthering theft or fraud" it's perfectly legit.

These VIN threads will sure let you quickly know who out there is a car BUYER and not a car BUILDER.
