Where to find speedometer drive gear for 1972 NP205?
Title.
Putting together a 1967 K10 and I've upgraded to a 1972 drive train. However, the transfer case that I purchased is missing the speedometer drive gear in the rear output shaft. It's the last year for the steel gear that has a smooth-bore and is used as a spacer between the rear output yoke and the bearing in the transfer case. Not necessarily looking to buy one here, but would anybody happen to know where to find one? Searched multiple other forums and selling sites but was unable to find one, and they're no longer in production. Thanks in advance! Looking forward to hearing your responses. |

Just a wild shot, did you check www.torqueking.com? Call and see if they have used or know a source.

Re: Where to find speedometer drive gear for 1972 NP205?
From my research I have discovered that NP205s only have "speedometer drive gears" on the outside of the case.
I have a NP205 with OEM sized tires and 3.73 gears. With this setup you attach the speedo cable right into the T-Case. My truck came to me with a 3-speed manual, NP205, and 3.73 gears. Speedo worked fine. I purchased a NP205 and TH350 from a Blazer that had 3.07 gears. This application had an external thing screwed into where the speedo cable goes and then the speedo cable screwed into that. After I installed that t-case into my truck - still with the 3.73s - I left the "external thing" out and my speedo reads perfectly. I can only assume there is a different "external thing" when you got 4.11s or 4.56s. In other words, using stock tires, if you have 3.73s, you're good to go. If you have something else you need one of these external devices. I hope this helps.

Re: Where to find speedometer drive gear for 1972 NP205?
Your "external thing" is probably one of these:
https://transmissioncenter.net/shop/...ratio-adapter/ Also NP205s DO have speedometer drive gears inside on the output shaft and they are changeable. That is what drives your "external thing". Here is a picture of two of the three that I have. These are ring and pinion type gear sets and if you look really close you can see that the pinion gear on the left has more coarse cuts than the one on the right. Same goes for the ring gears.

The external thing is a ratio adapter. The speedo drive gear sits just inside the case. I see Torque King only offers the nut that you see on the outside.

Re: Where to find speedometer drive gear for 1972 NP205?
There are only some many of these original gears available to swap. If you have really low gears (higher numerically) or tall as hell tires (or both) then you would order one of the ratio adapters to make your speedometer read correctly. There are drop down menus when ordering to help you get the right ratio as these are custom made. Used 205s are everywhere, call a yard and get your gear set (get both ring and pinion)

Re: Where to find speedometer drive gear for 1972 NP205?
I sold a 205 in October to a guy who mostly needed the case for a doubler set-up in his rock buggy. I pulled up the deleted e-mails for his number to ask if he's sell the speedo drive, but only my phone number was in them. Sorry, I hoped I could help
