49 One-Piece Windshield

Edited because I had a bad photo so you couldn't see details:

This windshield is interesting; it seems to be one piece glass.

Sorry, my fault for not posting a better photo.

If you look closely it is not V-butted - it is one piece glass.

Possibly V-butted with the seam filled with chip repair glue?

Re: 49 One-Piece Windshield

They heat and bend flat laminated glass to do that and the distortion in the midde is terrible in most of them.

This is a local truck to me that has an immense amount of trick work done on it but the distortion in the windshield is really distractiong.

That was one of the earliest ones of the one piece windshields around so they may have improved since but I wouldn't buy one unless it was at a swap meet or show where I could actually look at and through the one I was getting. You wouldn't want to be like the folks with this truck and have that much work in a really nifty truck and then not be able to see clearly though the windshield.

I was just thinking that it woud be nice if someone made a thin devider to go between the flat glass and maybe even powder coated it matt black so it didn't show up so much. That would take modified rubber or using another method to set the gass and some sort of soft piece to go in the divider to seal it.

77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

Re: 49 One-Piece Windshield

Oh thanks, that looks just like the one I posted. The distortion was obvious on it too. Maybe easier just to get a '54 cab, eh?

I personally just don't get it. The split windshield is one of the coolest things about these trucks.

And just so you all know, this is nothing new, that first appeared back in the eighties when the popularity of these trucks hit the road running.

Not to everyone, I sold my 49 cab and bought a 54. A better look IMO.

I didn't say that the 54 was bad! That is a whole different story, it's a curved glass, it's where Harley Earl was bringing GM with the wrap around glass and fins, the 54 is awesome! But to make a bent windshield to fit the two piece 47-53 just makes no sense to me.

Re: 49 One-Piece Windshield

I have to agree With Brian there. I see the "why" but in the maybe three trucks I have seen with it done in the past ten years all three had excessive distortion in the middle of the windshield.

I had my windshied V butted the first time I chopped the cab and could not keep it sealed. It takes a glass man who really knows what he is doing to carry that off right.

I still suggest if you are considering one of those one piece windshields go to some shows (and you might have to travel to a bigger show like Goodguys) and search out some trucks with those windshields and do some serious checkng including asking if the owner might let you sit in the truck and look though the windshield to see how it actually looks from the inside.

It doesn't matter how well you like the look if it bugs your eyes to look though the glass from the inside you aren't going to drive the truck as far or as much. We all know that guy with a really cool looking truck or rod who always finds a reason not to drive somewhere that is a couple of hours away with the travel group. He is at every little show within 30 minutes of the house but ask if he wants to hook up with the group and go to a real cool show 150 miles away and he all the sudden finds a dozen reasons he can't go. That distortion for me would be something that meant the truck would be staying in the garage while the "other" ride got to go to events that were further away.
