72 Inner Grill color

I am purchasing an inner grill for my 72 and I can’t find a definitive answer on the original color. I see most new grills say “argent silver details”. What does this mean? Does anyone have some insight on the exact color they originally had on them?

Re: 72 Inner Grill color

I heard somewhere...that '71 eggcrate inner grills were all black, then they changed it to silver in '72.
However....do not quote me on that. The guy I talked with about it absolutely insisted this was true tho'....?
Regardless, I like the silver finish....although I can't help you with the exact color match stuff.

Argent silver is the color, available in rattle can and liquid.

Re: 72 Inner Grill color

So is the whole grill argent silver? Not sure what details means. I was thinking maybe the leading edges were silver and the inner edges are gray but maybe I am overthinking it. I did some research and the consensus is there was never black available but who knows. I can't seem to find any literature by GM showing a black grill. I personally like the silver myself.

Re: 72 Inner Grill color

The egg crate only is silver, ie the inner grille (never black). The outer grille has black accent paint only (71-72 headlight buckets are not painted black, only the outer grille part around them). 71 only also has the perimeter black accent ring that was not present in 72 nor on replacement parts. Pretty rare to see the 71 perimeter black accent anymore, they’ve mostly faded out or have been replaced, but some still around.

Re: 72 Inner Grill color

Pretty sure '72 inner grilles were all silver, but '71 was silver with the 4 upper mounting tabs and the lower 1 inch or so painted black, but you almost never see originals any more. I will see if I can find a pic of my original '71 grille.

Re: 72 Inner Grill color

Well that makes it easy if it had to be painted. It would be a lot of work to tape all those edges. I have a nos outer grill with the black accent.

Re: 72 Inner Grill color

My 1971 OEM NOS inner and outer grill. Paint as it was when I took it out of the box last year. 71-72 inner grills were NEVER painted black from the factory.

Re: 72 Inner Grill color

Did the inner grill come with paint on it?
