Re: 72 400 Transmission
There were no 396 engines in 72 (so am not sure the SN lookup you used is reliable), however, TH400 would be the correct trans for a 72 (2WD only) that came with a 402.
TH400 SN is usually stamped on driver side just above the pan rail - any additional info there? |

Re: 72 400 Transmission
CJ-428 looks like F*%d nomenclature. Somebody will turn up eventually who can tell you what the CJ means.

Re: 72 400 Transmission
There is a lot of discussion about decoding engines and transmissions in these threads including discussion about my TH400.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...hlight=69t+328 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...69t+328&page=3 Do you have a picture of the tag that is riveted to your transmission? I believe the J in the code (CJ) you supplied indicates it is for a big block. |

Re: 72 400 Transmission
I think you've pretty much nailed it. I'm no expert (bruceman1968 is), but I'd say the trans is for a big block 1972 2 wheel drive truck, serial number 25605 built April 28, 1972.
