Lowering a Big10 question(s)
I've searched about 10 years worth of threads and haven't found a good answer to this. I'm looking to lower my 76 with the Big10 leaf springs. I'd really like to go 3/5 since I drive it quite a bit and still want to haul some stuff once in a while. Plus Illinois roads are awful. If you do a flip kit it looks like it would go at least 6 inches of drop? Is there a way to lower it 5 inches? Or is it better to go 4/6? The front seems straightforward with spindles/springs. Stock height now, here's a picture for reference:

A 5 inch drop is kind of no where.
You can flip the axle, and move the mounting brackets down to compensate. I would do this since it is the easiest to control with least amount spent. You could get 2" rear lift springs, and do a flip. Then trim with a longer shackles. You can move them both up for the drop. Either way lots of work. |

Flip kit.
C-notch the rear frame rails. Drop shocks. Drop spindles and drop springs. That’s the standard. Go 4/6. 5/7 drop is pushing it for bad roads. You’ll be disappointed in a 3/5 drop. It won’t be much lower than what you have now due to sagging stock springs. Remember these numbers are compared to NEW stock height springs.

This is my Heavy Half (Gmc version Big 10) with a flip kit, 2.5" spindles and 1 full coil cut up front. It still rode decent and it only bottomed out when I was hauling more than 600 lbs or so. It wasn't notched but I did remove the factory bumpstop an replace it with a buttonhead style poly one.

Flip kit, drop spindles, one cut coil from new BB coils. Cut off the stock rear bumpstops, new smaller front bumbstops. No notch needed. If you tow at all, throw some helper bags on it.

Lower it all the way and add rear helper bags for when you have loads in the bed.

This is my big 10. I used 3 inch spindles in the front with stock coil springs. For the rear i moved the front spring hangers up on the frame, and doubled up the factory shackles at the rear.
