Bought as a parts truck but having a hard time parting

So I picked up this 77 Silverado C20 with a camper package and 454. I have never really liked the 3/4tons as far as looks go anyways. I bought this off of the original owner and drove it 100miles home even though the exhaust was pretty much gone. The truck is pretty rusty as far as body panels are concerned but everything is there. The truck has had a few mods like lowerd and a target master big block installed 12 years ago. Just thinking this truck deserves a save possibly.

Re: Bought as a parts truck but having a hard time parting

Yeah it is really kinda growing on me. may need to source out some body panels. All of the trim is really nice shape on it. Had a camper sitting on it for a lot of years. It has these shock absorbers that go from the cab to the inside of the box and I have never seen that before. It has a rear sway bar that I have never seen before either but mind you I have not spent much time around 3/4 tons.

We can't save them all. The way I see it is some get parted out to save a bunch of others. However, that truck looks decent.

Re: Bought as a parts truck but having a hard time parting

OMG! A Z83 w/ all the hard to find bits?!? I can't believe parting out is even an option for that truck! I've seen worse being listed on Craigslist in the $3k-$5k in my area...

FWIW - I've saved every square I've ever owned so maybe I shouldn't chime in...

Re: Bought as a parts truck but having a hard time parting

Yeah the more I look at it the more I think it needs to be saved. It’s pretty cool that i bought it off if the original owner. It has sat outside for the past 12 years and that’s why the body is getting rusty. Fenders doors and box sides are still fairly cheap and accessible.

Yeah don’t think this will get parted out but initial intentions were to do so. May have to actually buy parts for it haha. You are right 77 is a cool year for square bodys. Need non rusty panels now.

Re: Bought as a parts truck but having a hard time parting

I’ve seen those option on a few trucks. I’ve got a 77 camper special here but it never came with those options. Mine doesn’t have camper mirrors either. The body on mine is almost rust free. Only rust is behind the rear wheel wells. I talked to a guy he told me the body panels from rpm Saskatoon are far better then the ones caps in red deer are bringing in.

You also mentioned yours has a rear sway bar. Mine doesn’t have that either. Would you happen to have a pic of that I’m curious as to how it was done.

One of these days when I have time to get it on he hoist I will snap a couple of pictures. It’s a big sway bar as well. I find it a bit odd the guy lowerd this truck but I like the look of it. It would be kinda neat to put the camper back on it and pull a hot rod around.

Re: Bought as a parts truck but having a hard time parting

That big sway bar, the bed shocks, & the chrome plates on top of the front fenders are part of the deluxe Camper Special package.

The sway bar is pretty rare to find complete, with all the parts in working order. I found a '76 SRW BBC C20 w/ the RPO Z83 being parted out & bought the whole sway bar package. After installing it on my Z81 (standard Camper Special), it's night and day re: handling.

Do a forum search for C/S, Camper special, Z81, & Z83. All your questions related will be answered.

Yeah I will definitely not part it now knowing what it is now. I bought it sight unseen and I just went and picked it up. It’s when I got it home after driving it myself 100 miles that I said to myself “ I can’t kill this truck”. Even if I don’t fix it myself I will find someone that wants to.

Re: Bought as a parts truck but having a hard time parting

It’s crazy how you can become attached to a old truck. I kinda did the same thing bought a 86 k30 to build as a off-road truck. Once it was done i didnt have the heart to trash it off-road and build a pos s10 instead. Glad i didn’t destroy it, still have it 10 years later

Nice to know another one has been saved!

Both of the trucks in my signature were bought for the axles... Now neither will ever be sold (by me).
