Can a later GM door work with the earlier door panels (73-78)?

73-76 have unique inner skins. The plastic interior parts look different in the 77-91 door skins (77-80, and 81-91 styles), but everything should interchange. If you want to put a 73-76 panel on a 77-91 door, you will have to cut the inner skin out, and weld a 73-76 skin in its place.

Dang, I guess I have to keep patching my 76 doors because it's too much hassle to change everything.

A little off topic, but can the different style dashes, guage clusters, and dash bezels be interchanged between all years?

The info at this link may help answer some of your questions regarding the gauges. https://www.73-87.com/7387garage/int...achometers.htm Bezels will interchange-although not always look correct. Dash pads changed in '78 to allow for a cut out area for the VIN plate mounted by the windshield. They are backward compatible though- something to keep in mind if you have a '78 to '80 though, you will need the cut out to keep your VIN visible.

Thanks. From a electronics perspective, it looks like you. Need to be careful with swapping clusters.
