what column when changing to overdrive transmission?
I swapped from a TH350 to 700R4 and can't seem to find neutral? When swapping to over drive trans are ya'll changing to overdrive column also? other option is floor shifter but rather not do that.
Thanks |

Re: what column when changing to overdrive transmission?
Same column works for both, just change the face-plate.. I would imagine the mechanical linkage is not adjusted right to find all the detentd.

Re: what column when changing to overdrive transmission?
Nope, As mentioned, the column is the same. I did the same as you...TH350 to 700r4 years ago. Figure where Park is on the trans & put the column up in park, go from there. You may need to adjust a bit from there go get all the gears (down into first) Good Luck, Lorne

Re: what column when changing to overdrive transmission?
Thanks. That what I was thinking. I'm just now getting it back to where I can test the trans and have only found neutral once. I've adjusted the linkage but no luck yet.

Re: what column when changing to overdrive transmission?
Park works fine, going in reverse is fine. But going to neutral it seems to go into drive instead.

Re: what column when changing to overdrive transmission?
If you still have the TH350 sheet metal shift indicator plate under the instrument cluster the needle might not line up on much more than Park and R.
Count the detents.Park-0, R-1, N-2, OD-3, D-4, 1st-5. Sounds like the detents are either a little sloppy or very tight so you are slipping two at once. Click it back one from Drive and it should be in Neutral. If it's hitting park and all the gears OK then change the indicator plate out to an OD plate and slide the clip on the needle cord around the column collar til the needle lines up properly.

Re: what column when changing to overdrive transmission?
My shift indicator on the column hasn't work the 10 years I've owned the truck. Haha. I have it on jackstands and it goes from rev to drive, I found neutral once. I think I found the issue, hopefully. I am using the Lokar shift linkage and I think I cut the rod too short? I ran it thru the gears and unhooked the rod and had one gear left so I am assuming that could be the issue. A replacement rod is on the way.

Re: what column when changing to overdrive transmission?
You can find the 700r4 transmission gear indicators on EBay for under $30 complete with all the clips and wire. Mounts to original location using original shifter.

Re: what column when changing to overdrive transmission?
I got under my truck with no linkage hooked up and manually moved the lever on the trans today and it doesn't seem to go into neutral at all. I'm not worried about the indicator, the trans seems to go from forward to reverse.

Re: what column when changing to overdrive transmission?
I swapped a th350 to a 200-4R overdrive and didn't even change the gear indicator inside the column. Nothing needs to be swapped to work correctly. Either the linkage isn't right or the trans itself isn't.

Quote:
Possibly the peaks on the shift detent comb in the transmission are worn enough between R & N and N & OD that you have a hard time feeling the transitions.

Re: what column when changing to overdrive transmission?
It is a brand new transmission with zero miles on it so should not have any worn parts. I talked to the shop that built it today. He said there is no way it does not have neutral. He confirmed what I was suspecting that it will act like that when off the ground. I have never tested one off the ground so it confused the crap out of me. He said get it back on the ground and bring to him. He is going to adjust the kickdown cable as included with the rebuild and he will adjust the linkage to make sure it is setup correctly. I hope to get it up there in a couple weeks. My fear was needing to change the column but now I know I won't have to change it out right now. Thanks everyone for you input.
