So I am getting my bed ready for paint and noticed that the mounting brackets have been broken off of my rear cross sill. The bed is already in primer and close to being ready for paint. Are these brackets necessary or I can put it on as is or do I need I need to replace it?

If this is a wood floor bed you are talking about, I'm not too sure that those aren't reproduced - thinking I have seen them. That's if they are the small brackets spot welded on the inside of the rear cross sill and the back two bolts go through them to hold the back of the bed in place. Pictures could help some here. Jay

That’s exactly what I was talking about. Was wondering if they were all that important or if I could get by without having to replace the entire rear cross sill for a wood bed.

I don’t believe you can secure the rear bed bolts without them??

I would be concerned that when I drew the bolts down it would 'crush' the boards down - that is what the brackets are intended to prevent. I actually made one to replace the one of my two that was missing on a bed I was working on at the time. Wasn't terribly difficult - just took a little time and patience and a small piece of sheet metal.

Yes you need them to bolt down the rear sill to the frame

You can either make up some new ones from metal, just make sure they are similar to the original ones...

or

You can buy a new cross sill from several suppliers....

Look for item listed as 5 under Wood Bed....

Other vendors have them as well, similar prices....or maybe someone has a second hand one they could sell ya...

Thanks for all the input. Does anyone have a close up picture of the brackets or have they can take a picture of so I will have an idea of what exactly I’m missing?

I added dimensions just in case you wanted to fab something up. I have a very rusty cross sill over here in Dallas. I got a replacement used one from Green's Restoration in Cameron, TX. If you need parts and can get over that far, they have everything.

I'm about to leave town or I would go out and try to get those brackets off the rusty one for you.

Here are just some other views of the shape and form of the bracket so you can see better how it is made.
I think the most critical measurements are the height so that it doesn't hold a board up too high or let it be pulled down too low and make sure that there is enough clearance for the bolt to go down through the floor, bracket, and frame.
