Re: Power steering with GMC V6?

My question is, why hasn't Captainfab started making these?

Re: Power steering with GMC V6?

This is the PS pump bracket I bought off ebay. I have no idea if it's correct or not because I changed my motor plans when I found out the motor wouldn't fit back in (easily) after I bagged my truck.

Re: Power steering with GMC V6?

Two reasons. One is finding pulleys that will work and second, I simply don't have the time with working 70-80 hrs a week every week.

The old Webshots link dies, so I had to shift EVERYTHNG over to photobuckets - Oh Joy!

Here are the pictures of my OEM mount setup, not the tie into the engine mount bolts.

Awesome pictures especially for someone new like me. I love the paint job also. Maybe someday I will paint my engine. Thanks a lot for posting these:-)

Re: Power steering with GMC V6?

I know this is a really old post but I don't know anything about the GMC v6s other than the PS brackets are relatively hard to come by. I have found a big truck with the brackets(a/c) as well. I have heard the big truck brackets are somewhat different. Does this mean they will not work on the smaller trucks? I appreciate any advice

if you have found the truck, have a look at the bracket and compare it to the one Jake has shown above. the engine blocks are all the same. biggest difference will be in the pulleys

Re: Power steering with GMC V6?

Here is a big truck V6 with power steering. I've seen them mounted high up as well as off to the side, like this one. I don't feel it would fit a light duty pick up.

Re: Power steering with GMC V6?

Does anyone know if someone is actually making these brackets yet and if the double pulleys for the fan are more accessible or someone has found an alternative source part that would do the job?

I would like to get power steering, but I would also like to steal the hydraulic pressure for a brake booster set up as well (hydraboost).

Thanks!

Re: Power steering with GMC V6?

AP; check out Rockdrillers build here;

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=453161&page=4

He’s using a hydro boost on the V6 and made his own PS pump set up.

Far as I’m aware no one is making any brackets.

Re: Power steering with GMC V6?

He is a picture of my low miler 64 GMC 1/2 ton.
Seems my pump is a different design to what I am used to seeing. Also, does anyone know of rebuilt kits to service the power cylinder and control valve, these are leaky little devils?

The cylinder and valve are basically the same as was used in the Corvette's up until '81?

Re: Power steering with GMC V6?

Thanks Captain, but finding it hard to get the right pump seal kit. I'm thinking it is a saginaw unit but did GMC's use a medium duty truck pump? This is not what you typically see on 1/2 ton trucks.

All the power steering seal kits are showing for GMCs with V6s on the Rockauto site

I see that and am skeptical if they are indeed for the medium duty pumps, I ordered a couple kits and will see if they are right or not, will report back but have a hunch they will fit the other smaller saginaw pumps that are more prevalent in chevy vehicles.

Re: Power steering with GMC V6?

IIRC, Oldsmobile and maybe others also used that pump in the mid-60's. I had researched the part numbers at one point and found the Olds models it was used on but have no idea where that is now. I can get you the original GM part number for the pump if that will help.

That would be great Bob, because I just received the rebuild kits from rock auto and they are both for the smaller saginaw pumps. So to recap, guys wanting power steering seal kits for the pumps for GMC Rock auto has sourced the wrong seal kits from all the vendors they are for the small pumps not for the GMC medium duty pumps found on at least 1/2 ton GMCs with 305 V6 engines. I have my brackets off , glass beaded and painted so if someone wants pictures and measurements, now is the time.

Re: Power steering with GMC V6?

As of the 1964 GMC parts book (printed in Sep 63), the part number for that pump was 5686708. That might get you pointed in the right direction with someone who isn't afraid to break open a book instead of just punching numbers into the computer. A quick search on the internet shows it was also used on both Olds and Pontiacs so restorers of those makes might be a source of information also. So far, the only thing not leaking on mine is the pump, I suppose that day is coming.

Some general questions, but MusicMan seems to have some good details in his post.

I have 1960 GMC with a 305A v6 and I am slowly gathering parts for my power steering addition.

I notice that the tricky part is the double groove pulleys for the crank and water pump.

Would anyone know if I would need 305v6 pulleys or if other pulleys work from other engines?

The water pump ones for SBC's look really similar, but searching ebay, everything says SBC for the cranks.

Thanks for any advice or tips.

Also, @MusicMan70, the bracket you modified to install your pump, do you remember what company made it / part # ?

Thanks,
Scott

AngryPirate; Here is a link to an eBay listing for a similar bracket.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/SBC-Power-S...pe!92881!US!-1

I have not investigated whether SB pulleys would work but my guess is a no.
