'86 GMC C-10 questions
A guy I know has an '86 GMC C-10 he's suggested could be available in trade.
Not sure of the exact set-up of the truck, etc. The guy says it has a 305, and he thinks the transmission is a 700R4. If we do the trade, it'll be a spare vehicle for when my S-10 is off the road for repairs or modifications. Aside from the usual old-truck checks and problems, is there anything specific to the model year I should watch for when I go to check it out? Thanks, Jim |

Re: '86 GMC C-10 questions
Nothing specific comes to mind. I have an 85 and they are pretty simple trucks. I will suggest you look for rust everywhere!
cabcorners under the battery under the floor mats anywhere on the frame rockers bottom of doors on the inside and anywhere else you can think of |

Re: '86 GMC C-10 questions
Thanks Jstock! I went and took a look today (and that was all I could do as the battery had gone walkabout). Rust in the cab corners, rust in the battery tray, under the floor mats on the driver's side, rockers, sides of the box. Didn't look a the frame as the recent thaw has the truck sitting in mud. Owner is going to pick up a battery and I'll take it for a test drive.
I did get a look under the hood. All in all, not too bad. Engine was reasonably clean (owner said he replaced a valve cover gasket, did an EGR delete). Carb is a Quadrajet, which can't be too much harder to rebuild than the Rochesters on my beloved old 250s and 292s. (Granted, I haven't done one of those in 20 years.) Per the label in the glovebox, it has a 3-speed auto transmission, so it isn't a 700R4. THM400? THM350? Rear end is a 2.73. Engine is a 305 (was secretly hoping it was a 292; I miss my I-6s). |
