LS in 71 K10 without transfer case?

Starting my research and parts acquisition for an Ls swap. Currently have 350/TH350 NP205 combo. I've been reading how to adapt the 4l60 to the 205 or use the th350.
Has anyone ever just put in an ls/4ls60 without a transfer case? I know it's a K and bought it as 4x4 but at this time rarely if ever use it as that but still like the "look". Just thought if it saved a ton of headaches and additional $$$ I could just run it as two wheel drive?????

Only have one swap under my belt and it isn’t a K, but my guess is it’ll work just fine. You’ll just have to worry about clearing the front diff if you don’t plan on removing it.

Re: LS in 71 K10 without transfer case?

As the previous post said there "could" be clearance issues between the front differential and oil pan/crossmember (what crossmember were you planning?) on a stock height truck. Without the transfer case you may be able to move the engine all the way back to the firewall for additional clearance.

Remove front driveshaft, install a transmission crossmember, get a new rear driveshaft the correct length made. Might have to check pinion angle as it will probably change with the slightly longer driveshaft?
Should all work. I have done the 4L60 to NP205 before. Both are doable.

Although not a LS swap, back in the day, long long ago, there was a local guy that had a square body 4x4 without a trace after case...if you got everthing cleared it will be fine..

That does work great. it just has to be a 241c out of a 90-91 k blazer or suburban with the front drive shaft on the passengers side..

Re: LS in 71 K10 without transfer case?

Thanks for all the feedback. I planned on going with the DD crossmember so shouldn't have clearance issues with what I've read on other swaps. I know one member said he used his original th350/205 combo but if I'm going LS would really like to have the extra gear. I know of the NP241C, and it's rarity but would definitely snatch one up if it came along. The worst part is I'm working overseas and can only formulate my plan at this point. That was the reasoning behind no transfer case, I think I could probably get an LS in and going on my leave but having to source adapters and probably fab or modify parts to get a transfer case to mate up would eat into the little time I have.

Depending what you are planning to do with gauges, the NP241 with the VSS may not be your best bet actually. You have to have a digital converter or digital gauges. I just did a K20 swap with a 4L80E and the NP208 also bolts right up. I used the Dakota digital 8k pulse sensor for the stock speedo.
