Edelbrock carb - period correct?
Hey guys,
I have a 1972 Chevy K20 that was not running right when I bough it last year, so I bought a new Edelbrock carb to get it going. The truck is fairly original, and I want to keep it mostly original and period correct to the early 70s. So my question is, were Edelbrock carbs around and being used on our trucks at that time? Or did they not come out until later, like in the 80s? Thanks!

Re: Edelbrock carb - period correct?
Kind of. The Edelbrock is nothing but a Carter AFB which was around. It was in the 90's that Edelbrock branded carbs showed up. But they Carter/Edelbrock would not have been found on a GM of that era. The mid 60's would have been the last of the AFB's.
Your truck would have had a Quadrajet on it, and no carb is better than a good Q-jet for a daily driver.

Re: Edelbrock carb - period correct?
Factory period correct No.
Mopar was big on the AFB. Even though Ford, and Chevy both used them to some extent. I have a Ford AFB avs laying around somewhere in plan to put one bastard Hot Rod I have to finish up. Period correct for Hot Rods yes. Although not as in vogue in the late 60' as the Holley they still were out in force. I would run just run it and enjoy, and get some nice diecast valve covers, and matching air cleaner. |

Re: Edelbrock carb - period correct?
Quadrajet is the way to go. Best carb ever made. If you know what your doing with them. They get a bad rap because some back yard mechanic meses with them and wonders why it runs like crap. My q jet had zero bog for instance. Because it hasn't been messed with.

National Carburetor has the carb you want for $200 remanufactured and tested. If you want a new one (I didn't think anybody made them anymore) they have that for $350 right now.

Re: Edelbrock carb - period correct?
That's a good option, if someone hasn't messed it up too badly in the last 50 years.

Re: Edelbrock carb - period correct?
I meant if the original poster's carb hasn't been too badly messed up by somebody in the past. I've had a few trucks that the Quadrajets were turned into junk by previous owners who tried to rebuild them.

Re: Edelbrock carb - period correct?
No, Edelbrock carbs are not period correct at all. Not factory (obviously) and not aftermarket. I think Weber made their first carbs, since Edelbrock was an intake company that never made carbs.

Re: Edelbrock carb - period correct?
Thanks for all the replies guys. I definitely got the information I needed and found answer I was looking for - looks like a nice Q-Jet is definitely the way to go! Unfortunately I didn't have the original one, when I bought the truck it had an old holley on it. But I'll look for a new one or maybe a good rebuilt one.
I see listings for "stage two" carbs... What does that mean? Is that for racing?

Re: Edelbrock carb - period correct?
Holley carb would be “period correct” but not factory for our trucks

Re: Edelbrock carb - period correct?
FYI Edelbrock sold 99% correct, made in USA by Bosch, QJETs that were really nice carbs. They were so expensive that EB did not order more when they ran out. It is cool to use the correct QJET because everything fits correctly and works so well. Be sure your intake "matches" the QJET.
