Help decoding firewall markings
Hi All,
I just recently picked up a '67 GMC C15 and I noticed there are what appear to be factory assembly line markings all over the firewall. Any one know what any of these might mean? I'm specifically interested if any of these are my paint code as my SPID label is long gone. Any help is appreciated. Thanks! CORT

Re: Help decoding firewall markings
The CE1590D is the first part of my VIN so I know what that one is.... Could the 550 be my paint code?

Re: Help decoding firewall markings
550 is paint code, not sure on j70, is the truck a power glide truck- pg on hood. Typically the paint code is around trans tunnel over to brake master. My 67 also had it on the driver side hood bottom. Vin and wheel base info on passenger side. May be a mark or two under heater box as well, 67 I helped a friend with actually had USA under heater box. One of my 71’s has a/c under box and 118 in letters about 14” tall under driver side bucket. My 72 4x4 was signed by John on gas tank. Where was your truck built? Seems like trucks built at Baltimore plant were written all over.

Re: Help decoding firewall markings
Thanks for the help! My truck was built in Pontiac. The truck has a THM400 now and I am not 100% it is factory, but the shift indicator has three speeds and I am sure it is original so I don't think it was a power glide.
Anyone know what color 550 would be ?

Re: Help decoding firewall markings
The 550 is an assembly line number not a paint code

Re: Help decoding firewall markings
J70 told the worker to install a brake booster (and your SPID would have had a J70 RPO).
2T is the trim # (Z62 in this case) (and your SPID would have had a Z62 RPO) CE1590D is your model #, not a partial VIN: 2WD V8 1/2 ton lwb fleetside. (and that would have been on the SPID also) A 550 paint code means ivory top over light yellow body in 67, but I agree with 67 twins that that is likely the line sequence number. But, it's also possible that 560 (not a valid paint code btw) is the sequence number and 550 is a paint code (I don't recall seeing the paint code on the firewall normally). Just not sure... So, what color IS your truck - i.e. when you look at the telltale signs of original paint (if it's been repainted)? |

What use is a paint code on a truck that is already painted? So why would the paint code ever be on the firewall?

Re: Help decoding firewall markings
Most 67 gmcs did not have spid by the way. Not sure why.

Re: Help decoding firewall markings
My 68’ GMC has 520 written across the trans tunnel, just behind the distributor. Happens to be the proper paint code. So I assume that’s it’s not a coincidence. I’ll look for some pics.

Re: Help decoding firewall markings
I'll take a better picture of the interior roof as it is still original. It doesn't seem to be either the saddle fawn or silver fawn, but it seems green-ish. Did the 67's ever have the exterior color painted on the inside?

Re: Help decoding firewall markings
Well I used some rubbing compound on a small part of the firewall by the heater box and I swear that looks yellow. Also, there is some flaking under the cowl vent that looks quite yellow as well. Maybe the 550 is right?
