The big block Chevrolet is the reason headers have a reputation for increasing HP, because the passenger car/truck exhaust manifolds aren't very good at all. Putting headers and a performance exhaust on an LS-5 454 was probably worth 50hp at the wheels, and on an LS-6 maybe 100.

On a truck, a dual 2 1/2" exhaust is probably not too shabby, but add in a big cam and high rpm and the manifolds are a HUGE power killer.
