More HP in new crate engine?
Recently installed this crate engine in my 72:
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/mll-bp3501ctc1 I have heard good things about Holley Sniper, but that it's more of a responsive, drivability mod and not a power gain. Are there any decent options for adding power to that engine? I currently have Ram Horn headers... wondering if new headers and Holley sniper combo might be a good move? Thanks |

Based on the link provided, this looks to be a pretty stout small block right off the crate. If it were mine, I would make sure to get the total timing set right and have my timing curve at the dizzy tuned properly for how I wanted the motor to perform. The data on Summit's page there indicates between 10 and 16 degrees initial and around 34 degrees total timing. I would check the springs and advance limiting bushing in your dizzy and refer to the manufacturers documentation to figure out about how much mechanical advance is being put in at what RPM for what is installed. It's likely you'll find that the springs are real heavy and the advance doesn't fully come in until much higher RPM than you'd like, necessitating a lighter spring to bring the advance in earlier. I'm guessing here based on the fact that most new distributors are delivered with heavy springs. Do this next stuff with any vacuum advance can disabled. Once you get the springs you want ( based on the manufactures documentation ), put a timing light on it and rev it past the RPM you know brings all the mechanical advance in at the dizzy and then adjust the distributor to set TOTAL timing at 34 ( or 32 ) and tighten it down. Test drive to check for any pinging under acceleration and retard if necessary. This alone could provide you with a bit of a bump in HP that may put a smile on your face! Hth, -klb

very little hp bang, if any, for your buck going with efi on that.
why ram horns? what exhaust is connected to those horns? what tranny, torque converter, and rear gear are you running? |

If 365hp isn't enough power maybe it's you who needs some adjustments That's respectable power right there!
Definitely do what weg92f suggests to get all that engine has out of it. Timing is everything when it comes to making power, and rev characteristics. You didn't mention what carb you are running now. How many CFM? That can be a factor as well

I am running the BP-3550CT
and have my initial timing set to 16 BTDC and total is all in 34 by 3200 RPM,s It is best to follow the manufactures recommendations as far as add ons like headers and required stall. It runs good but looking back I think I should have went with the 383 stroker for an extra few bones.

Although the Sniper itself won't get you more horsepower (it will give you nice starts and drivability for the long term) adding an electronic distributor (I'm not sure what distributor comes with that engine) and Hyperspark will get you computer controlled timing. Then you'll get everything they were talking out with timing - and more. The computer will be able to control the timing based on a variety of factors, not just vacuum to maximize power. Otherwise, if you really want more power (and who doesn't) put a blower on it.

Got to watch the compression with a blower. Not sure what we are talking with thins motor.
The thing with lighter springs is you will get quicker advance on the timing. The lighter springs 'allow' that. Especially with heavier weights. Even with computer control it all comes down to the mechanical making the power

i recently did the blueprint 350 / 375hp...
after researching their site, i found they test it with about 32* timing and i want to say a 600 cfm carb... the carb with net slightly more HP due to fuel atomization under the plenum and mixture temps (usually much cooler than efi).... a throttle body style injection may be similar, but due to self learning A/F ratios, that may sufffer. simply put; adequate sized exhaust, a good tune (either injection or carb) is the key. INTAKE MANIFOLD STYLE will vary based on injection style...no dual plenum manifolds for EFI. |

I would go with a bigger carb and long tube headers and 2 1/2 exhaust. I would use something like a 750 carb and as said lighter springs in the distributor but watch for detonation.

very recent dyno testing has shown that this HP range motor likes the Y into a single 3" with a straight through muffler...
check out a very recent engine masters, i thought i was going to sacrifice power by doing a SS Y to a 3" Cutout and single exhaust...i never even used the cutout. the new owner even called asking how to wire it up. |
