Drop spindles rub wheels??

Just installed one side of a pair of Western 2.5" drop spindles on the '66 C10. It already had 1972 crossmember and front disks on it. The new spindles contact the inside of the wheel. The wheels are 15x8 Torque Thrust II's. With the old factory spindles it cleared fine. I have not increased the rotor size and I'm using the same calipers. It appears that the top and bottom brake caliper ears are the only spots that are rubbing.There's lots of meat there, so I think I'll just get out the grinder and "fix" the problem. Just wanted to know if anyone else has had a similar problem.

your clearense problem

Ed, When using a drop spindle, you need to run a minimum of a 17" rim for this exact problem. Have you encountered a problem with the tie rods too?

No, just the caliper ears. I went on Western's website and it says that their spindles should NOT cause any interference problems with almost any wheel and tire combo. I'll call them in the morning. It appears that the interference is just barely there. The whell bolts on and tightens down with no more effort than before, but then the wheel won't turn by hand.

Is It Casting Flash That Is Rubbing? I Have Ground Caliper Ears Before To Clear The Problem.

Some 15" wheels clear drop spindles, it all depends of the amount of back spacing.



I had these 15" wheels with my drop spindles and 4" drop coils. They cleared no problem, but when I tried to use the same wheels I have on the back in the front, they rubbed tie rod, and control arm.

My DJM drop spindles rubbed on the Crager 15 x 8 inch wheels. The DJM installation instructions said to just grind the parts that interfere. I did just that. When you get them to clear spin them to make sure the wheel is not slightly out of round too. The wheels can flex in hard cornering so you might just have to touch them up again later if you hear something while driving.

???????? I run a 15x8 Vette-style rally with 4" of back space on a 2.5" drop spindle, and have had zero problems with anything rubbing....caliper, spindle, tie rods, control arm, nothing.

If it just barely rubs, do a little fine grinding until it clears. Most manufacturers will tell you this if you call them with this problem.

I've got the Western Chassis 2.5" spindles and 1/5" coils, and there is no rubbing with stock 15X8 truck rallys.

Steel 15x8 'Vette or truck rallye wheels may clear when aluminum 15x8's won't.

My son had 15x8 AR wheels on his '96. We did a DJM 2" spindle drop on his truck and had to go to a 15x7 AR wheel to clear the tie rod ends that contacted the inside of the rim when turning....and not a very sharp turn either. Larger diameter wheels should clear with no problems.

I got him a temporary spare from a '95 Caprice, just in case he had a flat on the front. It is 17" in diameter.

Yeah, mine are Torque Thrust II 15x8. Tuns out I DID have a little interference at the tie rod arm. They're huge compared to the stock units and I got them to clear but the wheel weight comes very close to the tie rod boot and I just generally wanted a little more clearance that I had achieved. I put on a 3/16" wheel spacer and solved the problem. But before that would work, I needed longer studs. If anyone's intersted in longer studs for the 71-72 Chevy Truck rotors, I used NAPA 641-3115 studs. They are 1/2" longer in the threads, the same knurl and have a small snout on them. Worked perfectly. I now have plenty of clearance. Thanks all.
