67 front drums not budging
We’ve all banged on drums to get loose but I have to tell you the front drums on my 67 c10 will not break loose. The truck has been sitting 10 plus years. The rears took a few hits but came off ok. Just not sure why the fronts are so tough.
The drums rotate fine on both front sides. There is a large spring that is wrapped around the drum. Does that need to come off? Is there something else holding it on? I’ve hit it with Kroil, wd40! And even heat and no budge. Any tricks out there ? I’m using a good old school wire brush and a sludge hammer. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: 67 front drums not budging
It looks like your hub may be riveted to the drum. Try taking it off as an assembly.

Re: 67 front drums not budging
Yep, the rivets are still there. Gotta pull the spindle nut and the outer bearing. Once off and cleaned up, grind or drill the rivets out to avoid the problem (and enable turning the drum, if needed).
I never could figure out why GM assembled them that way.

Re: 67 front drums not budging
You will want to leave the hub riveted to the drum if possible.
You will get a better result machining the drum as an assemble. Using the bearing raced as a pilot for the drum lathe will work much better than using the center hole in the drum as a pilot. Think run out. Unless your drums are wore beyond min spec and then you would have to de rivet. I would make sure you use machine with both the hub and the drum assembled. Hope this helps

Re: 67 front drums not budging
The spring prevents harmonic noise. Nothing to do with balance.
