considering a 6.2 in my 68?

I've found a local junkyard that has a 5.3 with 4l60 trans, complete system for $1750 and also a 6.2 that i'm thinking I could pair with a 4l80, complete package with transmission for $3750. I'm leaning toward the 6.2. Any issues that I may not be aware of that I should consider before pulling the trigger? Would the $2000 difference be worth it in terms of felt power/enjoyment, value?

If I could have found a 6.2 I would have for sure bought it over my 6.0. I'm assuming mileage is better on the 6.2 as well? I think you will be glad you spent the extra money now. You can always get the 5.3 up in power by spending that 2k on it, but if you can swing it I would go with the bigger displacement from the start. Just my 2 cents.

I just didn't know if there would be any issues with it fitting or using the 4l80 transmission. I'm not sure about gas mileage, i'm not that worried about that. It'll just be more of a weekend/play truck and i'm not building it to save gas. My only other concern is my truck is a stepside and i'm afraid the widest wheel I can put on it is an 8.5. Will this be enough tire for a motor that size?

I'd say a 255 (10") to 275 (10.8") wide tire can fit on an 8.5" wide wheel pretty easily. Tire selection is key and it will depend upon gear ratio along with open diff, limited slip, posi? Are you concerned about traction out back with the power the 6.2 should provide? I don't think it will be a huge concern as long as you take it easy on those lead toes and ball bearing ankle.

It will fit like it was meant to be there. I have a stepper and I am running 9.5" wheels with 275's. I know a 285 will fit, but I couldn't find them in 18" size. Tires won't last long with that motor, so don't get attached to them These trucks don't have enough weight in the rear to allow a one inch wider tire to help that much when hooked to much HP.

I have the 6.0 with a 4L80. I'm not sure what issues you will run into mating them together. Check in the LS Swap section of the forum and you can find about anything you need to do one of these.

I think i've got the short rear end with it being a 68 so i'm not sure a 9.5 wheel will fit. I'm being told a 10" definitely will not fit on the stepside and with the wheels I like (Ridler 695s), they only come in 8.5 or 10" so i'm assuming i'll need to go with 8.5 all the way around.

I'd do the 6.2 in a heartbeat. More cubes. It will have the good L92 heads. Most had VVT and some had DOD. It's a toss up on the VVT. Some delete it some don't. Everyone seems to delete the DOD.
Texas Speed makes a nice kit to delete VVT. A small cam (225I/230E) really wakes up these engines. If it has a bunch of miles I'd compression check it and pull the timing cover and replace the oil pump and timing chain. Also if its sat for some time I would pull the injectors and have them cleaned.

I would go for the 6.2. I had a 2011 GMC with the 6.2 and it was a hot-running truck, kind of wish I had kept it. Aluminum block, greater displacement, much more HP (85 more) in stock form than the 5.3.
