dana 44 questions

i got a front d44 diff serial number 603036 with drum brakes that i want to keep and was wondering, i also have a d44 diff serial number 603334( tried to look up number says not found) with disc brakes. both have 8 lug and looks to be both flat top knuckles. question is can i just swap the knuckles and backing plates and such and put the disc on the drum differential?

Yep, the ball joints are the same, as are the axles themselves. It sucks that you have to tear them all apart to get the knuckles off though.

thats the best words i ever saw jim lol just made my day as i was planning for worst. either way i am going to put in new ball joints and that ujoint that connects axle. and axle seals so has to come apart anyway. being new to four wheel drive and never owning a front wheel drive was wondering what that ujoint on axle is called. is that a velocity joint? any tips i should know about on getting this thing apart? do they make a puller for those balljoints or just beat out or will my regular car balljoint fork get them out? thanks again.

The ujoints in the axle are called just that.. Axle ujoints Just tell them what year dana you have..If your going to wheel it i would go with a sealed ujoint from spicer..They are just a little bit stronger than one with a grease fitting..

whoops, forgot to add my .02 about balljoints..
just undo the nuts that hold it on and tap the knuckle off(she'll drop out)..
next you can press or hit with a hammer the top balljoint out then the bottom one has a clip holding it in, take taht off and then press or hammer the bottom out. Then visa versa to install..
hope that helps

Beating works, but I found it easier to rent a ball joint press. Once you seperate the knuckle from the axle. You can set the knuckle in front of you and press away. The ball joints I got came from NAPA, I had got some from autozone but they sucked and I ended up taking them back. The ball joints will come w/ instruction on which to press out first and which to install. I saved them but can't find it, also my haynes manual had the procedure. I also recommend aquiring this part:http://www.partsmikeparts.com/ball_j...uster_tool.htm
I made mine, but for $10 I plan on getting one.

Well I would like to say yes you could get those at a parts store, but i remember the fun time you had trying to find studs..
They have other ujoints.. But with the off roading i do I have never had a spicer fail on me..worn them out, yes, but never broke or messed up my axles..
