Activating Hazards with a Switch?

I just got a 76 Blazer but the hazard switch on the column is missing including the plastic housing it would screw into. The signals and indicators all work so there is no issue there. I would really wish to avoid replacing a turn signal switch entirely if I could so entertain me for a bit. If in theory a guy had a few relays, toggle switches, and wiring lying around what would be the due course to getting hazards?


I know that the hazard switch is a switch that, when activated connects the hazard flasher (brown wire) to the brake lights, the right front turn signal lamp circuit, and to the left front turn signal lamp circuit.

Why not track down the wires in the harness coming out of the bottom of the column and splice in a switch?

The turn signals, hazard lights, and brake lights are all very intimately connected. You can easily find diagrams online for these classic 1970's and 1980's GM turn/hazard/brake systems. Study that diagram until it makes complete sense, and then determine if there's any way to do what you're suggesting. I suspect there isn't.

Well .....

You could splice in a wire between the left and right turn signals with a switch in the middle, then turn on either left or right signal and close the switch and all four will blink

Ask me how I know this: trying to hook up an American trailer to a foreign car with separate brake and turn signals.

You would need two switches; A front cross-over switch, and a rear cross-over switch.

The OP mentions a 1976 Blazer in his first post. All these 73-87 trucks should have identical turn/hazard/brake wiring, though.

Maybe... I ended up with 6 lights flashing (on either turn signal) when I tried to wire the foreign car brake lights into the trailer turn/brake lights. It was a disaster
