Grove in center of both front brake rotors ?
Was working on the truck and was trying to see if the spindles on my truck were CPP or not since there's a CPP spring kit all around. I noticed this grove on the rotor and first thought was aww F I've gotta take apart this truck to replace the pads and rotor, so I looked and saw that the pad has plenty of meat on it. I ran my finger nail over it and it seems to be a machined groove and not something akin to a bad pad. I checked the passenger side and it too had an identical groove in the rotor, I tried getting digital calipers between the wheel and rotor and seems about 1 inch down from the outside edge. I've heard of slotted rotors but not with a single groove. And since it's identical locations on both front rotors my mind tends to eliminate that it's bad pads , the second appearing line nearest the hub is just where the cast part of the rotor meets the machined surface , it's not a line at all
Here's a pic of the rotors |

Re: Grove in center of both front brake rotors ?
Looks like a 5 lug wheel so it is a stock 73 to 87 rotor. Could be from any auto parts store.

Re: Grove in center of both front brake rotors ?
What year is your truck? Mine is a 72 with front discs, and that groove is there so I don't agree with it being a 73-87 rotor. When I was looking at stock replacements they all had the groove in em.
I don't know any particular manufacturer, but I do agree that they can be had at any of the parts stores.

My 72 C10 has the same groove\rotors and I believe my 72 Nova also has the same groove as well.

Most stock style rotors have that groove. I've been told it's to show the rotors thickness, as in, if the rotors are turned past the point the groove is gone, the rotors need to be replaced. So you basically can visually check the thickness rather that checking with micrometers.

Re: Grove in center of both front brake rotors ?
See my thought would of been maybe the groove was there for assisting brake pad gasses so that the pad doesn't float

Re: Grove in center of both front brake rotors ?
That too, but in the days of turning rotors, that groove was a simple visual cue. Groove gone and the rotor not smooth yet? Replace. No question about it.

Re: Grove in center of both front brake rotors ?
ah, so glad about this posting. I was checking my rotors and thought darn that can't be good, then noticed the same grove on the other side! Guess if the grove is nice and deep - rotor are in good shape!

Re: Grove in center of both front brake rotors ?
I remember just the early 71-72 rotors having that groove.
