transmission change

I have a 1966 C10 with a powerglide and a 350. I want to change to a 700 R4. I can get a L460E out of an 1980 astro van but it has the electronics is it possible to use that one and what will have to do if I can?

Thanks

What year is that Astro actually, cause it's not 1980. Once we know that, we can tell you how to get it working. It will bolt up to the 350, no problem.

Re: transmission change

I agree with Jay.......there were no Astro vans in 1980. If the Astro van had a 4.3 V6, the trans will bolt up to any small block. To use a 4L60E in a non stock application, you will need a trans controller and a TPS on your carb. A 700R4 will need a kit to properly connect the TV cable to the carb for proper operation as well as a torque converter lockup kit/wiring and switch.

Re: transmission change

To go further, they did use TH700R4 (later named 4L60) TV-controlled trans, and then switched to the electronic control 4L60E in the early 90s (and earlier than the Caprice, etc). That's why we need to know the year. To get you set up with either the TV or a stand alone trans controller (which does exist in OEM and aftermarket).

Re: transmission change

I was once told that a 200 4r trans was a more direct replacement for the Powerglide. Their the same length making driveshaft easier.

Re: transmission change

Correct, and no electronic version, just the TV cable. Not as strong (stock) as the later 700R4/4L60s, though. Can be built strong, though.
